It was so scary. I thought the poor baby was dead :'( She lay there for 2-3 seconds out like a light. just last night she went on antibiotics and cough meds for kennel cough. i dont know if it was from that or something else. we had a long day yesterday. we had to drive 60 miles to a vet (because we had to go there for our free vet visit through the rescue we adopted her from). lonnnng day. and it was 114 degrees out (because we live in Arizona haha), but i dont think it was the heat affecting her. she was in the air conditioning the whole time. maybe from the kennel cough itself? she was worn down? i dont know. ive been doing research online and i see a lot about cardiac issues. i hope its not that So we will be off to the vet again today (they are going to try to get us to a somewhat closer vet this time, thank goodness). On top of all else, i am achey and feel like I'M getting a cold myself. Oh and she was spayed on Aug 5th. I dont know if it could have something to do with her recovery. It could be a multitude of things.... AH!
Poor girl, too much! What a rocky start . Maybe the vet will keep her in for a night. As you say, it could be any or all of those things, even dehydration. Let us know how it goes at the vet again; lots of good vibes coming from us near Windsor.
That is very worrying for you, the poor girl. It sounds like a long, long day..... Charlie fainted recently, when they lifted his head at the vet's to take blood. This resulted in the operation he was due to have being cancelled, and him being booked into a major vet school for a full going over - because (as you say) this can point to cardiac problems, no-one was willing to give him an anesthetic without the tests being done. The good news, is they found nothing wrong with him. They said he "had a high vagal tone" - this is a normal process in the body that regulates resting state, excitement, and all the subconscious functions in the body. If a dog has a high vagal tone, they are more likely to faint than other dogs. But there is nothing wrong with Charlie, it's a normal thing. I tell you this just to say that some dogs faint, like some humans faint, and it doesn't necessarily mean that there is anything wrong. But of course, there might be and you are right to get her checked out. Best of luck with it.
Sounds like a really tough day,you must feel wrung out,I can sympathise with you going about business in harsh temperatures,it's can wear you out xxx Sorry you've had a fright,I hope the vet assessment can ease your concern and tell you there is nothing to worry about xxx
Oh no poor girl you must be exhausted. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Mabel sends Dublin big Labrador licks from England xx
Oh no, poor you and poor Dublin. Hope all is fine when you see the vet with Dublin and that you're feeling better soon. Hugs and licks from me and Juno in France
Hi all! Thanks so much for the well wishes (and licks! ). Dublin seemed a lot better yesterday and not coughing quite as much, but still coughing. The vet was booked up so we are taking her tomorrow. She seems good for now. She's pretty wiped out still. We have stopped the meds until we see the vet. I'm thinking/hoping she was possibly just dehydrated/exhausted (from the long ride and the kennel cough)/the cough meds (maybe making her woozy?)/and still recovering from her spay. that is a lot to put on the poor dog. The vet we are going to is about 35 minutes away so not too bad. What a start we're off to huh? The rescue says they will pay for the vet visit and the bloodwork. im not sure if the vet is going to suggest xrays to check for any heart issues. I really appreciate all of you being here for us xoxo
It must be a terrible upheaval - all that, plus a new home. Let's hope you'll soon be on an even keel, and everything will settle down. Best wishes to Dublin, and you.
Thanks everybody! we went to the vet today and they took blood and are running lots of tests including one for Valley Fever, which dogs in AZ can get due to dust storms (parasites live in the dust I guess). That is also treated with antibiotics, but you need to go back every 2 mos for blood tests. Poor little Dub. We've started up her kennel cough antibiotics again as the doctor didn't think the fainting was due to them. I'm hoping the blood tests will be normal and there won't be any more fainting! That's enough of that.
