Charlie (4 months) has an ear infection - went to vet last Tuesday, who gave me ear drops, said to put them in for 5 days, and continue for another 2 if it wasn't better. So today is day six. Ear still looks very red and angry without much sign of improvement, although it's not worse I think: http://www.flickr.com/photos/97932779@N08/9120375218/ Back to the vet first thing though, I think. It is obviously a bit sensitive, but not bothering him too much - he still seems his normal self: http://www.flickr.com/photos/97932779@N08/9117588643/ But I'm very troubled about why it doesn't seem to be clearing up. The vet couldn't say where or how he might have got the infection. Since Charlie sticks his head into every gap/hole/foliage/bush/water he finds, it could be anywhere I suppose...
Re: ear infection.... That second picture is so sweet I'm sorry I know nothing about doggy ears, other than they can be troblesome and recurrent. Hope someone else can make a useful contribution to this. jac
Re: ear infection.... sorry no advice off me either, it looks very weepy.....he looks like a real darling
Re: ear infection.... Going back to the vet sounds like a plan I wonder if there is something irritating stuck down in his ear, like a grass seed? That's just a wild guess. I'm sure the vet will check all that stuff out. That photo on the sofa is lovely He is so cuddliable looking
Re: ear infection.... Yes, I'll take him back to the vet tomorrow. I'm not 100% confident in the vet I have, but it might be because I'm fussing about Charlie - he needed eye drops a while back, and they didn't make much difference either. Oh, I'm sure puppies are just like kids - bundles of germs, and they'll pick up all sorts which won't do them much harm in the long run and the vet is probably just fine. Hope so, anyway.
Re: ear infection.... I can't help either,no ear problems yet....but your second photo.....your Charlie gives chris and I a good chuckle every time we see him.....apart from his poor sore ear x Ps consider a vet change if you aren't happy, comfortable or satisfied .....
Re: ear infection.... I think it's important to have a vet you feel you can trust. As a first time dog owner I'm so aware of my lack of knowledge and need to feel like I can talk to my vet about anything(dog related!!)
Re: ear infection.... He is soooo lovely... But that ear looks very sore. What kind of drops did the vet give you? Hopefully it will be better by tomorrow.
Re: ear infection.... The ear drops were canaural brand, with the main chemical being diethanolamine fusidate - it was this: http://www.bayeranimal.co.nz/media/1617/Canaural.pdf Anyway, ear no better and Charlie wiggled and wiggled, while being examined by the vet (must work on the sitting still clicker training...) then cried when the vet nurse held him firmly so the vet could get a good look. Charlie cheered up immediately with a cuddle and a treat when it was over though. Vet said he needs to sedate him to flush everything out and check nothing is stuck down his ear which is now very narrow with gunk and wax. So booked in for Thursday. He can't have any breakfast before he goes, which is going to be a huge shock - he complains if his breakfast is even a minute late! Estimated bill £400 - wow. That's now in addition to two examination fees, and the drops. It's an expensive ear... good job it's so silky and cute...
Re: ear infection.... Oh dear Julie , I am sorry to hear this, poor little love, is he insured ? Give him a hug from me x
Re: ear infection.... On the up side, I've decided the vet seems to know what he is doing and I feel much happier with him now.
Re: ear infection.... Oh goodness... Charlie you are an expensive pup! Good job you are sooooooo beautiful...
Re: ear infection.... Great to hear that there is an action plan I hope that the eat flush reveals the problem. And it's good to know that you now feel more confident about the vet.
Re: ear infection.... Turned up at the vet's, with Charlie and his empty tummy - he complained bitterly about no breakfast, he thought the world had ended. The vet decided the ear looked better, so would double check sedation was really necessary. This time, Charlie was super good and didn't wiggle, well not so much anyway, so the vet was able to get a really good look. He now thinks Charlie might have a damaged ear drum, and so cancelled the sedation and flush out as this isn't a great idea if the ear drum is damaged. Apparently, the ear drum will heal on its own. I wish now that I'd asked more questions about this but I've got to go back in a few days, so I can ask then. I now have the task of syringing and cleaning the ear every day for a week with a saline solution. Oh gosh, this is going to be fun. With the vet, and the vet nurse, and me, we just about managed it for the first time - and we were all pretty wet at the end. I'm thinking of wrapping Charlie up in a big towel to stop some of the wiggling - and the towel will also be useful to mop up afterwards!
Re: ear infection.... Poor Charlie. Worse than small children! Don't forget to avoid standing to one side when you've finished washing out his ear to avoid the head shake wash-down! ;D

The towel sounds like a good plan. Just a thought, you might want to wrap him in it a few times with lots of treats before you try and clean him so he gets used to it.
Re: ear infection.... Oooooh ouch for Charlie, wonder how he has done it.Going to be tricky, definately a 2 man job at least, have you selected your volunteer? This is different ailment but let me tell you this it might help. We struggled with eye drops at first ,Dexter has to have them quite regularly ,Chris used to have to get him in a big cuddle and hold him round the snout while I went in with the eye drops in one hand and held his eye open with the other.....treat afterwards...we did it the same way / same time everyday ,as is often the case Dexter amazed me ,after a few days of this we noticed when we said 'drop time' Dex 'he just went and lay on his bed and let one of us do it.......so we went from having truly wriggly to truly compliant without trying... Different body part and more water involved I know however....... We've also have to syringe out his willy......don't ask!same equipment, as you, different body part!we opted for the same method.....Husband much keener to volunteer for the part of restrainer than flusher!yes we got wet and we were very cack handed the first couple of attempts but went at it in the same way as the eyes ,ie did it in the same place, same time everyday and it got easier and easier.try the towel,we just went at it hardcore in our shorts!but it might help The things you do!good luck, long as you have manpower you'll manage x
Re: ear infection.... if it was my little fella, i would have to take him to the vet nurse every day........some say they get ticks in their ears, i am afraid that i would not be able to deal with this ......it would be another trip to the nurse,...hope he feels better soon

I've been there!! Bones loved it so much after a while, as soon as I opened the medicine cabinet he would fling himself on his back and offer all his bits to me!!!!!!! :
