I'm stupid,I thought Advantix protected us.....it doesn't,it's Advocate we needed....
Dexter has been shaking his head from the end of last week.....he'd had a mucky ear last month that I thought I'd got rid of :'( anyway I went for a second opinion at the other vet I use and he said he would flush and give him some Canural drops. So we are on ear flushes and drops for 2 weeks with no swimming.he says if I'm not happy to go back in a couple of days but 2 weeks is an acceptable time period for there to be an improvement .....poor lad ,he looks a bit mis today :'( he didn't like the ear flush but he stayed still for it...think it was too big a leap from his Mum's version in the kitchen which is cushioned by sea biscuits and cuddles.
Apparently ear mites are rife and persistent in Doobs.....

I was going to add on to JulieT's thread. .....

    http://www.thelabradorforum.com/index.php?topic=2806.msg28912#msg28912

But the system said it was best to start a new topic.....sorry,ears come up all the time ,I was trying to be efficient ;)

If my memory serves me right Pongo had some sticky ears recently and Thornit powder was mentioned?
I'm off to look that up....
I hate ears not being right,I was brought up with the rule of anything smaller than your elbow not being put in your ear.....it feels wrong to be swilling soapy water around them and upsetting the balance :'(
Hope we get them better :'(

Ah, poor Dex I hope it's sorted quickly. You did right getting another opinion - Charlie's ears were a mess for months, and I ended up going to see a dermatologist and we got them cleared up.

Thornit powder is reportedly effective against ear mites, but you are right Advocate is as well. I've never used Thornit powder (although I bought some but thought better of it) as my vet was adamant that Charlie stayed on Advocate.

Casper had irritated ears, he may have been infected by our cat, who recently had a bout of ear mites. We use frontline on Remy, he is always getting ear mites though.
We used Thornit powder on Casper and they disappeared, it was recommended by our breeder so we had a small pot here. All we did was daub a pinch of powder in the outside of his ear and gently rub it in.
I must admit meant to mention it at the vets at the weekend, (Casper had a slight weepy eye) but forgot. His ears were checked however and were fine. In normal circumstances I would've consulted the vet before using something not prescribed, but as a few of my friends use it i was unusually gung ho! :) :)

Oh man, felt awful for him today.....for those of you that have gone through this ear flush business does it seem to make them worse before they get better?Hes shaken his head a lot more in the last 24 hours since I started doing it...I'm telling myself that makes sense as he is shaking debris loose following the sensation of the liquid in his ear....poor lad,I hope I'm doing it effectively.....I think I'm going to go back Thursday to get them checked before the weekend....there's no way I can wait 2 weeks.....the vet could tell that by my intake of breath and said bring him back before if I wanted him checked over..... ::)

Poor Dexter, ear flushing is horrible like this. And yes, you are completely right, it seems to be the sensation of water in the ears stuck behind a large gob of adherent wax that seems to make them shake like fury. There's a lot to be said for a single flush under sedation at the vets, done such that all debris is removed and the ear canal is clean and dry to the eardrum before sending home with medication. There are some really nifty little things called ear wicks your vet could use, which are like a very compressed piece of sponge. Clean and dry the ear, insert ear wick right down the ear canal near the drum then add medicated drops. The sponge then swells with the liquid in the drops, holding a soothing medicated soft plug in contact with the ear canal all round. You only need to top up the drops every 36-48 hours or so. Remove after 7-10 days. Works really well, and Dexter would have the great excuse of being a little deaf and could ignore cues safely because of this....

He DOES NOT need any excuse or encouragement in that at all ;D

Thanks for letting me know it's not unusual ...I'm watching him like a hawk that he doesn't shake too much or too hard......I'll mention the ear wicks when I go in.....don't hold out much hope though to be honest ....
I'm living and breathing positive thinking ( honestly) that when I go back I'm told he's all clear with sparkling ear canals.....let's see xxx

    Re: Ear Mites!

Aaaaaahhhh I haven't been able to shift what is down Dexters ears with the couple of flushes done by the vet and my DIY flushes 2x daily at home....he's had a miserable weekend...he enjoys his walks and is of course eating ??? But he's lethargic and uninterested in the house...I haven't seen him ( or felt him) pick a toy up and drop it on my feet for what seems ages :'( he doesn't even follow me round the house like he normally does ....
So when I went back to the vet today I asked if he can be sedated and the debris cleaned out properly and swabs taken to find out exactly what caused this .....having done a week of flushes and trying to save him from this it seems kinder rather than irritating his poor ears over and over again....
We register tomorrow at 7.30 am No breakfast for Dexter....I'm bracing for the guilt trip over that already....if he knew , he would be practising his 'look'
Hopefully he will be on the up after tomorrow and start to be more himself ...l

    Huge sympathies. :(

The whole poorly ear thing was a nightmare for Charlie too, sore ears are just miserable. I nearly opened the champagne when we got it sorted, I was so glad to see the end of messing about with ears.

Hope you get a resolution soon. Tummy rubs to Dex.

Poor Dexter. Hope the deep flush sorts it out. It will be a huge relief for him the get the muck out if nothing else. I expect the Dubai dust doesn't help.
