Please help my 3 year old has just been diagnosed with Elbow dysplasia and had to have surgery to remove the “floating bones”. Been told he would need to go in a crate for 2 weeks. When in the crate are you allowed to take them out to go a toilet??? Feeling rather stressed about the whole thing...!

Hi Clare, Sorry to hear that your dog is going through this.

You might find this article about Crate Rest useful. The author has also written a book that has been well received on the topic.

Your vet should give you lots of advice when you take him in too. I think generally they say to take them outside on a short leash to go to the bathroom.

Hi @Clare so sorry to hear of the problems for your boy, I have a girl with ED so gave been through surgery and rehab and continue to live and have fun. It sounds as if your boy had Fragmentation of the Coronoid Process with surgery to remove the bits of bone. My girl had this at 8 months and is now 4 years old.
My surgeon had us on crate rest for 4 weeks and we were allowed 3 x 3 minute 'walks' on lead per day so in reality little more than a short walk around part of the garden of the house we lived in at the time. Any additional toilet breaks were on lead.
Happy to try and answer any questions you have from my experience.
