Vespa ate a whole packet of butter yesterday. This morning-after her breakfast of three sardines-she ate an entire loaf of bread-bar the crusts. I'm not kidding. I gave her her breakfast, left the room for long enough to put shoes on, and came back to find she had jumped up, torn into a brand new Sainsbury's seeded loaf and scoffed the lot-minus the crusts!

    A. Greedy cow-that could've fed 5000
    B. If she wanted a sandwich she should just have said
    C. Contents of the bin-delicious-crusts somehow not good enough-for a Labrador?!

I know all this is my fault-I shouldn't have left any food anywhere other than the ceiling-but she hasn't jumped up and stolen food for over a year and has never opened a new packet of anything. Aaarrrggghh!!
Back to square one on that one then.

I think I'm going to just sit by the door with my coat on today. :-/

Oh dear, not good , little monkey ::) ::)
I think most Labs are greedy but some are just driven to eat , yes, all things edible put away if you have one of the latter variety ;)

Oh dear! Just when they've lulled you into a false sense of their model behaviour they decide it's time to liven things up a bit ;D
Always expect the unexpected with a lab :D

Yes.. What I find difficult is that she's so stealthy. She never does anything when I'm in the room. I left her happily licking her bowl/finishing her fish and honestly within less than a minute in total silence she'd eaten the bread! When I then had my own breakfast she did her smartest 'sit' in front of me and looked as if she was waiting for some leftovers. Errr.. No chance! Grrr.

Ah, total silence. Beware the silence....

Pretty funny that she left the crusts ;D

Yes. Like kids. If it goes quiet, you know something's going on!
Yes the crust thing is weird. She will normally eat literally anything including lots of things that are not food but both crusts were not even touched. I almost wish I could've watched how she did that. She still ate half the bag!

When I take Otis to my parents, he is a devil with the sugar bowl, if it is left out, he will lick it clean. He can be awful, I think he wont nick anything, then he will suddenly lunge and swipe something, not that often, but still. Its always something really unhealthy isnt it, sugar , butter , bread ! xx

I found out the hard way that I could teach Lady to leave food alone fairly easily, but actually what I was teaching her was to leave food alone when I was in the room. All bets off when she's on her own. ;D

And just to add a parallel to that, she won't roll in fox poh when I'm looking but she will when I've got my back turned. ::)

I remember hearing about a study someone did with dogs and their owners shut in a room with food on a table. They tried different scenarios to see when the dogs would take the food and when not. They not only did it when the owners were out of the room, but also when they were there but with the lights out !! Now that it smart....

Thanks for that. This has made me laugh.

I have child locks on all my kitchen cupboards and two child locks on the freezer door.

No they're not there because I have children, it was because of one dog.

So I don't think the ceiling would have been safe.

One day I shall tell you all about the adventures I and my poor family have had with all the dogs I've took in.

I love the the study of dogs stealing food in the dark.

    Priceless

Oh....all I can say is I can relate. A pound of butter? Yup. Loaf of bread (home made, cooling on the counter)? Check. After awhile you can laugh about it but at the time...not so much..... ::)

At least I'm not the only one! I had imagined you'd all have well behaved dogs that had been trained at ten weeks not to touch anything. Feel a bit better now!

Edsel once came fetching me an entire loaf of freshly baked bread! He was quite proud!
