In view of the tv programme The Truth About Your Dog's Food on Channel 5 , Has made me question what food to feed Jake we currently feed him Autarky which is free from wheat gluten and artificial flavourings and preservatives . We also fed our last rescue dog on Autarky for the 6 years that we had her without issue and she was always healthy and was never at the vets till she got old . Having compared other similar dog foods with a higher price tag and smaller bags of food their does not seem to be a great deal of difference , Other than Arden Grange which contains 750mg/kg Glucosamine , 740mg/kg MSM and 520mg/kg Chondroitin . Now does anybody know if the 750mg Glucosamine is per kilo gram . If the above added extras are per kg then that is good for joint health if they are just the amount in a 12kg bag then they are insignificant amounts . With all the above said i am considering going part Raw Feeding for some meals and treats no more processed treats . Mike
Re: Feeding Kibble I have definitely given up the processed treats Mike - for me AND the dog, haha! She gets bits of cheese or ham as reward treats. I can't answer the question about glucosamine, but I can give you encouragement about the raw feeding, whether you do that partially or fully.
Re: Feeding Kibble Processed dog treats can be just terrible - I spent a while looking up the contents of them and horrors! The calorie content of some of them is absolutely staggering. I stick to the fish4dogs stuff - some quite large fish skin treats are as low as 2.5cals for 10g, which is a bargain for a sizeable treat that is easily handled on a walk. We need a lot of treats, as we are still learning lots of stuff. No advice on brands of kibble. The kibble I use has 1000mg of glucosamine and chondroitin per kg.
Re: Feeding Kibble
750mg/kg Glucosamine , 740mg/kg MSM and 520mg/kg Chondroitin . Now does anybody know if the 750mg Glucosamine is per kilo gram .
Mg/kg means mg per kg.
Re: Feeding Kibble I wouldn't be concerned about getting Glucosamine and Chondroitin in their diet. A review study recently concluded that there is no benefit to humans. So that could probably be applied to dogs. Check out all the labelling now and you will see vague if any statements about what it does.
Re: Feeding Kibble I have to say I agree. I took glucosamine and chondroitin for years, with no discernible positive results. Only thing that helped in the end was a full hip replacement.
Re: Feeding Kibble I use Arden Grange for Penny and I have to say its a lot better than other dog foods I have tried with her. Their meat is human grade quality and ethically sourced. It is a little more expensive but in the end it works out the same because you can feed less of it's it's better quality. Penny has about 120g per day split into two meals, she's 18.8kg. I would consider raw feeding if I had the space to store it, which we don't. So I've opted for the best alternative I can find. At the end of the day it is your decision what to feed your dog and what you feel agrees with them best. Kibble, meat and raw all have pros and cons and to be honest that program on channel 5 didn't really answer any questions for me... It just made statements which I already knew!

Re: Feeding Kibble Autarky contains human grade chicken and chicken carcass along with a various range of herbs , We used to feed our last dog Arden Grange about 6 years ago then the price went from £20.00 up to almost £45.00 for 15kg bag . So we researched alternative hypoallergenic dog foods as she did suffer with upset stomach at times so wanted a close match to Arden Grange at the time and then continued for almost 6 years , Over the years it has become our local pet shops best selling alternative to James Wellbeloved and one of his all round best sellers he had never heard of it until we asked him to source it for us . Re: Feeding Kibble When I lived in Somerset I only ever fed my dogs on Autarky. I had an old dog who was on Autumn because of the higher levels of Glcosamine etc, and she lived til a ripe ol 15 yrs. I only stopped when we moved as I couldn't get it anywhere else. I am now on Trophy - Home delivery, which has less extras in, but they are both still fit and healthy. Research always contradicts itself after a few years. Now we are onto Seaweed as a joint supplement. :
