Hi, I am after some advice about my 6 month old Labrador. She has just been spayed. At the moment she is feeding on Eukanba large puppy. The vet has suggested changing as post op weight gain can be rapid and puppy food has more calories. Can anybody suggest what to do please? Or any brands?
Weight gain can be managed through feeding less food if necessary. I think it's more important to keep on age-appropriate food that has the correct ratio of nutrients for optimal growth. I had my first bitch spayed at 6.5 months and I didn't have to adjust her intake at all, because she was still growing rapidly at that point. My advice would be to keep on the food she's currently on and keep a close eye on her condition. If she starts looking a bit pudgy, reduce her intake a little. Remember, you're also increasing the amount of exercise she's getting month by month at this stage, too, so I found it all evened out. My girl (now 3 years) now gets fed about half as much as her brother, who is entire, now that they are fully grown. But my 11-month female puppy, who is still entire, gets fed much less than they ever did, volume-wise, because she is prone to getting chunky, and she's still on a junior food which is higher calorie.
When I had my girl spayed at 5.5 months my vet advised switching to Royal Canin Junior Neutered. I've always weighed food before serving so have no problem maintaining weight.
