Dexter has been on lead walks for 3.5 weeks......as his stitches should be coming our today he's been given more and more supervised time out of the cone the last couple of days .i have also not been so scared of him hurting himself on his skids to a stop in the house so I've been blowing his recall whistle at opportune times around the house to revise a bit.
We got up and out for 5 am today armed with roast chicken as it's really quiet in the park at that time now it's not so hot.theres a villa at the one end of the park where 6 cats live ......it's a challenge everyday, don't think we will ever walk past there without looking a complete mess!anyway I reccied the house and bushes on the 'drag' past and walked Dexter up to the top end of the park....it felt like the first time I was letting him off,I was a bit scared.anyway he did a long sit/stay and a lie down before I released him .......oh goodness me......he went like a bullet out a gun the whole length of the park.....and it was still DARK.Thankfully because of his tags I could still hear him( I know you hate them Julie but I was very glad of their jingle this morning :D) and I know he was in the cat bushes for sure.....so I walked over to be nearer to him to whistle him and a cat dived out of the bushes and down one of the access paths towards the road    my heart nearly stopped as he disappeared after it.I just whistled him and he spun round and came straight back mid chase......if anyone had been looking out their window and seen our victory dance they would have been laughing all day!the roads are deadly quiet at that time too but even so he gave me the fright of my life.....
He got another few runs out and a few clips back onto the lead before we headed off ...then he was a little menace the rest of the walk.....pulling like a demon!
Despite the pulling I was happy with the recall,I've been worrying about it to be honest even though it's not a problem going back a few steps ,which we will still do just to reinforce it ,I was worried he would have forgotten ,everything ,not the case ,phew!

That's brill! Good boy Dexter! Bet he got that chicken - and well deserved! A recall from a cat chase is worth dancing about. :) :) :)

Charlie is now tagless, with the info written into his collar. My collar light should arrive today though - had a fun time falling over 2 other owners in the park last night while we tried to sort out 3 dark dogs having a play. So can appreciate the need to find a labrador in the dark now!

Good boy Dexter, recall from a cat chase, don't think we'd manage that!!! Angela, perhaps you need one of the LED collars we were talking about on a different thread? Still waiting for mine to arrive...

Everyone, I was amazed,I think he just reacted with surprise rather than obedience ;D he HAD just DRAGGED me past the cat zone trying to get in the bush a few minutes before in his total tune out zone.It was a fluke, not a boast at all but it has really given me confidence that he remembers his whistle and hasn't been spoiled into forgetfulness during his recup!.....then he was a steam train for the rest of the walk making the usual total show of me walking past the handsome man with the black lab and working cocker ......his dogs walk calmly and perfectly ALL the time and recall verbally back to him and sit at his feet when he sees another dog coming along.....I asked how he had achieved this once and he told me to get dexter on a choke chain, dampened my crush on him a bit that answer! ;D
