Pongo has what seems to me (in my over-anxious mother mode) quite a nasty little cut / abrasion on his cheek / jowl. No idea when or how he did it. He won't let me look at it properly, but I'd say the fur is missing over an area the size of a ten pence piece, the skin is raw and pink / yellow, and every now and then he is (gently) pawing at it with his hind foot which sets it bleeding again. I've been trying to just keep it clean with tissues soaked in cold water - he seems to like the cold feeling and will let me dab at it with those - although he is then determined to lick them! If he was human I'd put witch-hazel on it, to keep it clean and soothe it. Would that be a sensible thing to do, or do I just leave him to get on with it? He's not particularly distressed, just a bit subdued.
Re: First aid for dogs Well, once I knew that it was nothing serious - a vet checked - I treated something very similar sounding on Charlie's face (which was a bite that he'd scratched) with hibiscrub. Wet area, apply neat, rub in and foam up (with a damp bit of gauze), leave for a minute, rinse well, and dry very well. Sorted it in a few days.

Re: First aid for dogs Oh dear. Pongo will not leave his face alone. Whole side of his face now soggy fur with him trying to paw at it. Going to vet this afternoon (have to pick up his worm tablets anyway so may as well get him look at while I'm there). Someone tell me to stop fretting.... :-[

Re: First aid for dogs He's a bit miserable to be honest . Shaking his head, pawing at his cheek, pacing round the room - not like himself. He had a good ten minute session of pawing at his face and started to really smell of that metallic blood smell...know the one I mean? Right now he is laid down with cheek on paws just staaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrriiiiinnnnnnggggggggggggg at me... Got a vet appointment at 6pm. Will see what he says. Please thank Harley.... it does make him feel better to know she cares...

Re: First aid for dogs Oh dear. Pongo wears the cone of shame. Half his face is shaved and he keeps bumping into door frames with his cone. Unhappy puppy. But at least he's got some antibiotic cream and tablets so it ought to clear up in a few days.... :'( :'( :'(

Re: First aid for dogs Infected cut of some sort - possibly self-inflicted (maybe scratching an insect bite, or maybe an itch where he got some muck on him). Absolutely huge area of raw red and yellow skin - looks horrific, and probably much worse than it really is! But he isn't going to get much sleep tonight with his cone on - he's not a happy puppy...
