Hiya, what medical items do you keep at home for your dogs?

Very good question! I don't. Apart from pro kolin. I live a street away from my vet though. But I should have something maybe. All I do is make sure I have the number of the nearest emergency vet wherever I am if not at home.

Only two items kept here as our Vet is close too , one is prokolin and the other is Hibiscrub . Not really a first aid item as such but I always have a pot of natural probiotic yoghurt in the fridge for the dogs x

Purple spray, hibiscrub and a bit of vet bandage. All acquired gradually over various injuries and vet visits ::)

I have quite a large first aid kit for both humans and dogs in the car but I carry a few bits with me on shoot day. Wire cutters, saline solution, a tube of glucose gel and a cut off leg from a pair of tights to use as a muzzle or tourniquet.

Excellent question! I don't have anything specifically for dogs... there's a human kit, fairly depleted actually, but it does have bandages and saline solution.

Only what's left over and still within dates from the last vet visit so.

    - Metacam
    - Eye drops.

I used to have LOADS of medication from my old boys in the medicine cabinet. But yesterday evening when Pops was limping I realized I no longer have anything at home specifically for dogs. But my vet's office is just round the corner :)

David, just a word of warning on eye drops. Alice had a very serious eye injury a couple of years ago so I am quite familiar with a whole range of different eye drops. Some medication can make certain eye conditions worse. So, unless prescribed by the vet for a specific condition I will not use eye drops even when they are still in date. There is one product though that I keep in my first aid kit which is Lubrithal, it is a little thicker than most eye drops and it might not always cure an eye problem but it will not make it any worse either. At least that is what the vet told me. I use it for Alice's eyes before and after work to give her a little bit of protection especially the damaged eye with has had a corneal graft.

purple spray is left over from my horsey adventures - it gets a mixed response but it's basically supposed to disinfect. Hibiscrub is probably better :)

We have unopened metacam from previous prescriptions, noroclav tablets, same.
Hibiscrub, various bandages, and socks from the little girls next door, as they're an ideal size for dog paws!
I don't keep medicine after it's expiration date, and would never use it without direct vet instructions. We had a dog, George, a few years ago, that was prescribed noroclav, I bought it online for close to £200, and bless him he passed away before much of it was actually used. So when we took another dog to vets, it was prescribed again, and I mentioned to the vet we still had George's stash, so she was very kind enough to write the doseage, without charging for prescription instructions etc.

Hibiscrub is a brilliant thing to have in. Comes out every time there's a little graze. Used on the humans too, if I tell them where it is! :)

Not really first aid, but we have the half price chicken breast frozen pieces that Tesco always have on offer. That way if either of them have an upset tummy, it's always in as an alternative feed to dog food.

Oh, I know what I always have handy - that's a packet of frozen peas in the freezer! When Pops trod in a wasp's nest in the summer and got stung in the face it came in very handy. Just ate the rest of them yesterday, so must remember to buy more!

An old boxer-breeder friend gave me her recommended first aid kit list when we got Lilly - must look it out - I remember it suggested Piriton.

    Re: First Aid kit.

I have a pretty sparse first aid kit, shame on me I will have to sort that out, but I do have:

Pro Kolin - thank you lovely forum memebers for that tip
Corn flour for cut pads - thank you lovely Kerryn for that tip works a treat
    Bandages
Ear wash for Hattie which is not really first aid

    That's it. :)
