So, I arrived last night at the puppies' house, where we're staying until Sunday until we bring our new girlie home. I brought some home-baked goodies with me - banana and peanut butter cookies and liver cake. I thought I'd try them out on the adult dogs, Ruby and Jake (the parents) and Drake, who is an old man, Lab x Doberman. Drake is quite stiff in the morning, so lays in the sun until his joints loosen up. He moved here (south-west France) from Edinburgh in May. Back in Edinburgh, he had been given a couple of weeks left to live, but since being here, he's become like a puppy again, leaping around on walks and looking really content with life. Anyway, I digress. First thing, he moves for no-one and nothing. I tried him with a B&PB cookie first. He took it tentatively, broke it into a million pieces which he looked at and eventually and deliberately hoovered up, all the time remaining on the floor. The two labs, of course, just inhaled theirs. Even they, though, didn't look massively impressed. Next, the liver cake. Absolutely no hesitation from Drake. He just gulped it down immediately, then stood up (shock, horror!) and started following me round like I was the bringer of all things magical. Ruby and Jake, the same. I now have three dogs who won't leave my side. This is a high-value treat indeed! I think I may have to make a batch to leave here for them when we go
Re: First attempt at baking treats has mixed results Banana or liver? Banana or liver? Decisions, decisions... ;D ;D ;D
Re: First attempt at baking treats has mixed results My two adore liver cake , it just makes me feel a bit yucky making the stuff , but hey , whatever floats their boats and at least you know whats in it
Re: First attempt at baking treats has mixed results Yes, whizzing up the liver in the liquidiser is YUK. I put a tin of tuna (unsalted) in instead, small tin.
Re: First attempt at baking treats has mixed results Sounds yummy for dogs could you give recipes possibly? Lemmy sends a soft puppy lick if you could. X
Re: First attempt at baking treats has mixed results Blitz up 500g of liver in a food processor with 2 eggs. Stir through 200g flour (I used whole wheat). Pour into a lined cake tin and bake at 150C for 1hr. Cut into small cubes when still warm, then allow to cool and freeze until needed. Super easy and the dogs go mad for it!
Re: First attempt at baking treats has mixed results Thank you for recipe I shall definitely be baking some for Lemmy and my Mums lab Dylan. Its good to know I'm not alone indulging my puppy. Sure they know they are extra loved had dogs all my life but never fell like I have for my lab its those big doleful eyes I'm sure lol. X
Re: First attempt at baking treats has mixed results
Yes, whizzing up the liver in the liquidiser is YUK.
I was enthusiastic about making liver cake for the full 4 seconds it took me to get to Stacia's post. Now I just feel sick. ;D
Re: First attempt at baking treats has mixed results It is kinda gross. I love to cook and enjoy eating liver myself, but for some reason blitzing it was pretty disgusting. I also couldn't bring myself to try a piece, which is unlike me - I'm the girl that likes to taste the raw beef when I'm cutting it up for our ferrets!
Re: First attempt at baking treats has mixed results Going to try this later...as have a special boy to stay this weekend....
Re: First attempt at baking treats has mixed results I like liver. That recipe looks great, I think ill sskip the freezing part & just have the liver-shake.
Re: First attempt at baking treats has mixed results Liver cake is popular here too. With Mira, that is ;D I know what you mean about not really wanting to try it.... Works well with non-wheat flour too if you want to avoid wheat. Keep meaning to try it with sardines or tuna too.
