Josie's first vet visit to get her jabs did not go well.

We mentioned to the vet that she had been itching a lot so she took a look and said she is likely to have lice or mange. She has been prescribed a 5 day course of antibiotiocs.

We also mentioned she has had diarrhea a few time so she had a look over her and said that her glands were one of the biggest she'd seen.
She only weighed 3.35kg, and the vet said this is pretty low for her age, and said she looked about 5 weeks old rather than 8!

I'm just sad that we only got her on Friday and we have an unhealthy puppy alreday, I thought the breeder maybe would have picked up on some of this!!

Back to the vet on Friday to see how she is then.. :(

:( Sorry to hear about your pup. I would call the breeder and let her know what the vet has said. They should have picked up on this and let you know. She should of had at least 1 vet visit before leaving the breeders. Have you seen any paperwork or anything which confirms her date of birth?

I have spoken to her and she was very apologetic. Yeah I went to the 7 week vet check with her and they seemed to say she was ok then. The breeder thinks her weight is fine as her mum is a small type lab and not a chunky one. They were weaned from mum at 4 weeks as she wasnt looking after them so not sure if that makes any difference.

I just hope this clears up soon, nothing worse than seeing your baby unwell :(

Oh poor Josie and you too. I'd definitely contact the breeders and speak with them. They should have had a vet check, imo, before she left them.
What a worry for you, I hope little Josie picks up soon and you get some answers.

It is horrible when our fur babies aren't well :( but you are doing everything you can to help her. Please keep us updated and we'll all be keeping you in our thoughts.

I wouldn't be too worried about the weight. Lucan was about the same at that age, some working bred pups are small especially if they're from a large litter. Saying that though, I can't see the pups overall condition.

A lot of the problems could be exacerbated by the stress of going to a new home and taken away from litter mates. I'm sure things will soon be back on track.

Thanks for your replies! She has contacted her vet for the papers from the first vet check so she said she will send them over soon as.

She has also offered to pay half of the vet bill which I think is very kind of her too.

Aww poor thing, and worrying for you! Sounds like Josie is getting the care she needs, it's amazing what the right mess can do no how quickly pups can turn around so try not to worry, hopefully this will be just a little blip and she will soon leave it far behind.,

    Oh poor little mite.
They cause us as much stress and worry as the human babies for sure.
    Hope she picks up soon.
That is good of the breeder to offer to pay something towards the vet bills.

Hi sorry to hear that your pup is poorly but an upset tummy in a puppy that has just left mum and littermates is not unusual. Is your pup still on the same food as at the breeders, as a change of food can also affect their tummies. Has the pup been treated for fleas? Breeders normally treat and worm puppies before they leave for their new homes, and I would have thought the vet at the 7 week check would have been querying the schedule adopted to ensure that all was on course.

I'm surprised your vet didn't prescribe a medicated shampoo or something such like to go along with her diagnosis of lice/mange for the itching. Did she take any skin scrapings to get a confirmed diagnosis for possible mange as there are different types of mange?

I wouldn't worry too much about your pup's mum not having much to do with the litter from around 4 weeks of age. It's not unusual as the pups are pretty much weaned onto solid food at 4 weeks and those sharp little teeth start hurting.

Hope your pup is better soon

I hope your pup is getting healthy. I wouldn't think the weight was that low for 8 weeks. Cooper was only 2.5 kg at 7 weeks. Tilly was about 3.4 at 7 weeks. Cooper was probably the runt of the litter, and she is now a very big girl, at 24" and 80 lbs.

She's still acting fine she's never acted unwell just the itching! She's taken her medicine and hopefully will kick in soon although I think the antibiotics might be making her stools looser!! They are such a worry at time, poor things!

Hi everyone. Josie got on really well at the vets on Friday the vet was super happy with her! We've got her back onto her normal food (beta) and she seems to be having horrible diarrhoea:( we stopped the treats we were giving her (wag training treats) last night incase that was problem but she is still having diarrhoea! I'm starting to think it's thget beta! But it's the same food the breeder fed her on... Has anyone else had problems with beta??? Thanks :)

You could try feeding her on chicken and rice or fish and rice to help settle her tummy. Once you have firm poo slowly start to reintroduce the kibble, and fingers crossed she'll be fine :) The upset could be the kibble, or it could be the puppy treats or a combination. It is often better with young puppies to use just some of their kibble for treats rather than buy commercial treats as their tummies can be more sensitive to the different ingredients.
