The vet gave my puppy treatment as she was growing so fast the treatment goes on the puppies weight to get the right dose.
It's not safe to estimate it yourself.
I went to the vets every month for the flea worm treatment until she weighed over 10 kg.
Now I just phone up and get it over the counter as it's from weight 10kg to 25kg dogs.
First it was a pippet on the back of her neck but now it's 2 tablets one for worms and heartworm and another for flea and ticks.

I think depending on where you live and what your main concern is dictates what product you select. A secondary consideration is method of administration. Some products are multi purpose but are stronger in one area. So if you have more ticks than fleas and your lab eats anything then there are orals for that. If fleas are more of a concern then you can go with a collar...... for example.
