If my memory serves me correctly Barbara uses a flea/tick Collar on Riley and I just wondered how effective you find it? Discussed with the Vet a Seresto collar which combats fleas and ticks, they are £40 but last upto 8 months so I wouldn't have to buy Frontline which is pretty pricey and doesn't always work. Anyone else use this particular collar? Thank you.
Re: Flea/tick Collar Sorry cant help Helen as I havent ever used them but you`re right, its Barbara who has them for Riley, no doubt she will see this and reply when she is online xx
Re: Flea/tick Collar Hi Helen, You are right, Barbara does and I've meant to send her a message about which brand she uses because I picked this up yesterday from the vet for £15 http://www.flickr.com/photos/97066992@N03/10996650995/ It's not the brand you have mentioned but you can see the massive word POISON on it and it's scared me a bit.I know Barbara said on another post she was using it as an alternative to the drop on chemicals to protect Lizzie when she's handling Riley....the back of the box I have says don't let children handle it....George and Sophie are all over Dexter....and he's got quite a few little friends in the park that run over to see him too. The one that I have bought says that the dog must not chew it....don't let other animals chew it.....Dex plays with other dogs and one in particular is quite a rough player who rolls Dex by the neck ( that's another thread for another day ) that is a consideration to you with the 2 dogs when they are playing .most interestingly it says not to be used with any other pesticide treatment ie Frontline or Advantix .....which Dex has....oh I don't know,I think I've wasted my money as I don't think it's a fit for us.....I am taking a couple of ticks a week off Dexter and I'm so scared of missing one,I thought the collar would be an extra precaution.I guess in our case I'm going to have to rely on vigilance and Advantix ...I'm interested to see what everybody else thinks x
Re: Flea/tick Collar So we have a Seresto collar, apparently it slowly releases chemical based on the body temperature of the dog which is higher than our temperature. The vet said it was what she used on her dogs with their children and she'd specifically asked the manufacturers about use with children. Is it totally safe....I doubt it as it is impregnated with chemicals but I think it's the best option for us. Keeping Lizzie off Riley while spot treatments work their way over him is a total pain. I worry that it won't break if another dog gets it's jaws caught though and sometimes take it off if Riley is put in the kitchen with a dog he likes to wrestle with.
Re: Flea/tick Collar Both vets (London and Cornwall) recommended these to me - and I saw the Cornwall vet's dog, he did have one on. I asked whether they were better and got two different versions of "well, it takes the faff out of doing the spot on treatment". I prompted about swimming (eg was it better because the spot on treatment effectiveness is reduced by swimming) and didn't get a clear answer. I've decided not to use these - I don't have kids (it might be a big factor if I did if they really are safer), Charlie hates collars (main factor - I cannot put up with the whinging and moaning from him), and with our ear infections we want the protection of advocate, and I don't want to double up. So I'm happy to stick with advocate plus tape worm treatment and 4 or 5 treatments of advantix in the tick season. But I've never found a tick on Charlie yet, so that's another factor that might be different!
Re: Flea/tick Collar The woods round us can be riddled with ticks. We've had to pick them off riley and I loathe them!!!!

I asked about advocate today for lung worm and my vet said they see so few cases and it is not common in our area, I hope she's correct, I was a little shocked that she asked me if Hattie ate snails and slugs ???. Also Hatties' ear infection have only ever caused by mites once when she was a puppy. So upshot is DrontalPlus and Frontline unless I change to the collars but £80.00 for 2 dogs is a lot She also mentioned Droncit 6 monthly for tapeworm as advocate doesn't cover this, have I got that right? Sorry this subject keeps cropping up :-[

We are not 100% sure what causes Charlie's ear infections - latest theory is ph balance, but ear mite protection still v important. Charlie has a "charming" habit. He picks up snails, brings them to me. When I say "is that for me?". CRUNCH. :-\ Yes, advocate plus tape worm treatment just about covers it all.
Re: Flea/tick Collar
Don't you mean "is that for MMEEEEEEEeeeeee?????......." ;D
I do! I do indeed! But trying to wean myself off it! Oh, bugger, we're SO not serious, I may as well stick to my "MMEEEEeeeeee"! ;D ;D ;D
Re: Flea/tick Collar OK silly question time from me : when the Vet said lungworm is not common in our area, does that mean specific snails and slugs that carry the worm? ??? Charlie stop eating snails - yuk, yuk, yuk!! Barbara you are not far from me do you treat for Lungworm?
Re: Flea/tick Collar Eating snails, huge urban fox population, and South England, plus infection more common in dogs less than 2 years = a significant risk for Charlie.
Re: Flea/tick Collar Hmm.. I'm Drontal XL and Frontline. Thought about the Tick collars but really can't get my head around the concept of a "collar" on all the time. Last year we were constantly picking ticks of Lilly. This year we have only had 2 or 3 so the pressure to change to something "more effective" has actually abated. I keep listening to all your chats on this though.
