Morning everyone, I am hoping this is progress of sorts. Charlie has been pointing and flushing Pheasants in the woods but not chasing, they go up he comes back, is that the start of some sort of control
at last or maybe just a fluke? ::) Thank you xx

I have no idea. ;D It's one up from Lady though. If she comes across one hunkered down in cover it gets presented to me flapping and kicking (she's really fast at close range) so I've got to really keep her clear of pheasant woods. :-[

Whichevrr it is Helen it's very good. ;D

Hopefully it is the start of him controlling the pointer instinct in him and doing his pointer job. I'd be mega rewarding when ever he does it. ;D

    Sounds very promising.

Self control on his part learned by you controlling him in the first place ;D Actually, I had one GSP who always sat to the flush without any teaching on my part. I guess Charlie's reward to his pointing is the flush and then he comes back to you so that you will send him off again to find another pheasant. He sounds as if he is really coming on very well.

Helen, how strange, my hunting mad boy brodick does similar! Heaps of pheasants up the hills, he is mad with excitement when he gets a scent, hunts, flushes, stops, watches them fly off. If I let him he would start to rehunt straight away as he knows where there is one there are normally more, but I call him back now, and then I release him to hunt and flush again, It took a wee bit of long line training to get him to believe i would let him hunt again if he came back after a flush, so you are better than us too, good boy Charlie! Cuillin, my normally Prefect Like Good Girl, is an absolute disgrace with Pheasants....

Have you swapped Charlie for another dog?

We take no credit for training this, I am guessing it's all natural behaviour and probably a few flukes ::) I suppose not putting him back on lead after he has flushed/returned and releasing him must help. Thanks x :)
