i have trouble leashing as dog focuses on my hands and bites me when touching collar, which was also difficult to apply.
have never had a lead on before, like you I can't even get collar on, bites us, only time she does that. She is also focused on hands. I want to train her to go in one spot. I have hired a dog behaviorist, coming thurs. Will see. I can't brush her either
We have difficulty brushing ours and have remedied the issue by giving him a tennis ball to chew. It's that distraction that keeps him from wanting to chew on the brush.
The hands, collar, and lead have to become predictors of good things. Let us know how the counter conditioning progresses.
I started desensitizing my puppy to the lead. She hates it or chews on it and used to also bite me. I quickly touch her collar then reward for not bite, pull away if she bites. She got it quick. Then I started putting my fingers through her collar, and reward for no bite. Just kept progressing. Now with the leash, I'm applying her "leave it" and "touch" training to that. I waive the leash in front of her and say "leave it" and when she does I reward. She now has learned to "touch" the lead with her nose on her own, so I reward that becuase her nose is better than her teeth! She still chews on the lead once on her, but my hands are no longer being attacked. On the flip slide, her leash training is a nightmare. She pulls and almost strangles herself daily and I can't get a no pull harness on her becuase she'll bite me so I'm working up to that by using the same approach and showing her the harness, having it touch her, etc. I got it on her once but she was very stressed so I'm working at it more before it goes on her. It's a daily struggle but slowly changing my approach to dealing with it has paid off. Keep trying new things, all puppies are different. Mine is treat motivated! So when I first started and just had to get the lead on her, I dropped a treat in front of her face to prevent biting me.
