Hi, I have just reformed a six year old Labrador bitch. She is adorable and obedient but has started attacking my Jack Russell’s when there is food around. They are quite elderly and I am terrified she will hurt them. She has only been with us for 2 weeks and was recovering from Pyometra op when she first arrived so I guess she is feeling stronger now so trying to dominate? Really can’t keep her if my little ones are at risk and I have a 15 month old granddaughter so not sure if she is at risk too. Any help appreciated
Hi @Sally Kinnerly Spread the food bowls far apart. As soon as the Lab finishes, she must leave the area. Use a lead, if necessary to encourage her to go outside. I would of course supervise the lab when children are around. The dog may not have issues with humans. It may just be other dogs. Perhaps it was the only way of she getting hier meal before she arrived at your place. Put the lead on before the meal starts. Foog guarding is something that can be mitigated very well. Have your noticed any reactivity should you go near her bowl? Don't force the issue. No growling from you. Just observe. If so, write again and we'll let you know what to do.
