    Hi everyone

I am after a bit of advice on what food to change to now Boston has been castrated. He has been happily on Purina Pro Plan Puppy until now.

The vet gave us a bag of Royal Canin Junior, Neutered, Large Dog, Digest & Weight 31 (goodness knows why they need such a long title!). However it seems very expensive and actually quite hard to find the specific type unless I buy it direct from the vets or Royal Canin.

The vet said there is probably a neutered version of the pro plan but I can't find it? I may try to ring Purina today for advice but I just wondered, does it have to be a 'neutered' food? Can you just go onto an adult diet? Boston is nearly 10 months old.

    Thanks for any suggestions...

I would just change to the adult version of what you were on. I am not sure why a different food would be needed post castration ? ours just carry on as before.

    Hi there,

When did Boston have his op,hope he's recovered ok x

I've never heard of post-castration food either. I have heard dogs don't need quite as much food if they're castrated so I would be more tempted to use a standard adult food and watch his weight.

Did the vet say what the "neutered" food contained. The rest of the title seems to suggest weight management. If that's all it is then just give him less of a normal food I would think.

Good luck, hope Boston has recovered well from his op :)

I think it is just a selling strategy! Dogs don't need special food just because a little bit of their anatomy has been removed ;D Feed what you always have or an adult food, but just watch your dog's weight and adjust the food if needs be.

When murphy was castrated they told me to put him on castrated adult food, and suggsted the royal canin one. I investigated and saw that symply which murph is already on did a "light" version and the vet said to out him on that. Its just a low calorie version, they said it meant he could eat more of it without him outting on weight coz they said that after castration their appetite more than doubles but their metabolism halves or something like that anyway. I have always been in two minds about him being on the light food, but because he has a sensitive tummy, i dont really want to chop and change if i dont have to, and he seems fine on it. X

I have two castrated Labs and their appetites haven't doubled! They eat what they have always eaten and are slim and fit.

I have had castrated males their appetites did not double nor did their metabolism change, only thing changed was when we did less or more exercise and when one went on steroids. Other than that they were exactly the same.

Hi all, thanks for your responses! Sorry it's taken me so long to say thank you :-[
Had a very busy few days trying to stop Boston pushing the cone of shame off his head to get to the affected area! Even today the vet said it must stay on another 5 days!

Have taken on board all your advice and will move him onto the adult food, I am looking into gradually introducing Millie's Wolfheart.

Pretty sure the vet was just trying to make some money by confusing me with extravagantly named food!

Boston has been OK since his op but is still a bit sore, I had to stop the anti inflammatory medicine as his tummy did not agree with it!

Can't wait to get him back to normal walks though, I swear he looks at me with his lead on as if to say, I've been a good boy, why can't I come off the lead?!
