HI all Can anybody tell me how much and how many times should i feed Cooper who is now 10 months old and i feel tat feeding him 1 cup is too little or is it the correct serving... : (Edited by Rachael to move post to its own thread and to change title)
Re: Food quantities for 10 month old pup Thank you Rachel for editing and posting the topic in a new thread im in a bit of a hurry so jus posted it der i started to work and worried abt Cooper more than ever i feed him Royal canin maxi junior 1cup in the morning with 2 spoons of chicken or beef broth everyday bcoz he wont eat the plain kibble any other way sometimes he turns up at this topping too im really worried and wondering if 1 cup is enuf or should i feed him more he is healthy active and playful otherwise i don knw wat to do he gets his regular walks 2 to 3 times a day too. 1. He is biting or nipping which im finding it difficult to distinguish between aggresive and playful, growls wen we try to calmly take things away from him,he understands us so well for example if i call him and tell him "lets go walking" he wags his tails and comes to me the mere site of me wearing slippers tells him tat its walking time and 2. secondly wen ever he takes things in his mouth he comes to us shows it and then runs away with it indicating tat we should either cme and take it or leave him alone tats the time he growls but doesnt show his teeth and 3. then wen we come back from work he wags his tail quickly grabs a ball or a bone or something he can find and circles around us with his ears pinned back is this normal way of greeting : : : : : 4.he has not been neutered yet and still pees in a squatting or sitting position wen does he begin to mark his territory 5.pls tell me wats normal and wats not from this essay sry for the trouble :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[
Re: Food quantities for 10 month old pup Hi Teena, good to hear from you! Cooper sounds lovely. He doesn't sound like a very greedy Labrador, but that's nothing to worry about. One cup of food doesn't sound like an awful lot - I feed my dog twice a day, but if he doesn't want more and you can't see his ribs sticking out then I wouldn't worry. He looked fine on the last photos you posted. I wonder, does he get any treats during the day, which mean he is not so hungry for his kibble? The biting or nipping is not aggression, he wants to play. But he needs to learn that that is not the way humans play, so when he does it, just turn your back on him for a moment and ignore this behaviour. Remember to praise him for gentle play. Bringing you toys and play-growling also indicates he wants to play. I love your description of his behaviour when you come home - yes that is normal and he is obviously very happy to see you! At 10 months he will soon start lifting his leg to pee. If you want to have him neutered, around 1 year old is usually felt to be a good time. Sounds like you are doing a great job with him!
Re: Food quantities for 10 month old pup Hi Karen lovely to hear from u too.. can u please tell me if feeding him broth or meat daily may harm his health bcoz he doesnt want anything else to eat the thing is his appetite is changing often so im confused and don knw wat to stick with on daily basis he loves eggs off late he is becoming reluctant to eat it or sometimes he scruffs it down i usually mix it with plain rice and he loves it but not now anything alse u want me to luk into or an advice would be appreciated he is licking his private part and paws often wat does it mean or is it bcoz he has an allergy or infection last week my vet checked him but he tld me not to wry
Re: Food quantities for 10 month old pup If your vet told you not to worry about the licking - then try not to worry! Also, what sensible Labrador (or any dog?) wouldn't rather have meat, broth, eggs and rice rather than his kibble? If you only want him to eat kibble, then you have to stay hard and only feed him that! But I'm not going to say too much about it, as I know you've been given this advice befor. Can you post a photo of Copper?
Re: Food quantities for 10 month old pup Hi Karen here is the photo of Cooper tat u wanted thou its blurred ill try posting a better one soon and in ur last post u mis spelt the name of Cooper as "Copper" don mistake me for pointing tat out tc...
Re: Food quantities for 10 month old pup Sorry about the misspelling! Stupid autocorrect... : Anyway, he looks perfect on that photo.
Re: Food quantities for 10 month old pup posted this pic to know if he is thin or obese or he is the correct weight comments anyone...
Re: Food quantities for 10 month old pup Cooper looks fine, you say he is having a cup of kibble twice a day? Have you weighed how much that is? My 2 older dogs have 140 and 150 grams twice a day of kibble. (Skinners Field and Trial duck and rice) They are aged 2 and 4. What do the food manufacturers say on the packet, every food is different? You are feeding a good quality food, but maybe should be on Adult food by now, he has done most of his growing. Puppy and Junior food has high protein (30%) which can make dogs hyper, adult food is around 22%
Re: Food quantities for 10 month old pup He looks great, Teena Ann. In great condition and so handsome!!!
Re: Food quantities for 10 month old pup Dear Indy,Rachel and Jacqui thank u for ur comments. Im feeding Cooper Royal Canin Maxi Junior which says he must be fed 324gms(2x162) per meal or 3+3/8 cups i don knw wat that means right now oly 1 cup twice but don knw how many grams tat is but if u have any idea pls let me knw im posting a pic of the pack with the feeding guide advice needed on it and am i feeding him gud quality food
Re: Food quantities for 10 month old pup I feed the same brand of food - but not large breed. I feed labrador retriever junior. The make up of the two foods are almost, but not quite, the same. If you are using the Royal Canin measuring cup, you are feeding about 200g - or about 60% of the recommended amount. That's the same as I feed Charlie on restricted exercise. I think you said Cooper only gets lead walks? So I reckon you are feeding and exercising about the same as me. Copper does not look too thin. So I reckon you have things about right. There is no evidence, by the way, that a high protein diet (most Royal Canin formulations are quite high protein - the food you are feeding is likely to be about 30% protein - although I haven't specifically checked the sensitive digestive formulation) makes dog hyper active, or is damaging to puppies' health, but lots of people do think that. There are some links to studies here: http://www.thelabradorforum.com/index.php?topic=3094.msg32820#msg32820 Which did not find a link between high protein and hyper active behaviour.
Re: Food quantities for 10 month old pup
Which did not find a link between high protein and hyper active behaviour.
This is our experience of Working Labs which are highly driven anyway. The link quotes: CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: For dogs with dominance aggression, the addition of tryptophan to high-protein diets or change to a low-protein diet may reduce aggression. For dogs with territorial aggression, tryptophan supplementation of a low-protein diet may be helpful in reducing aggression. The OP said her pup was showing signs of dominance aggression, growls when he takes things in his mouth, when trying take it back.
