Done lots of work around Charlie's football...er...issue. OH's turn to get back from work early to take him for a run in the park. OH busy (his words) "picking up a T-Rex poo" and takes his eye off our charming little man for a millisecond... Charlie, spotting his opportunity, legs it through the open gate into the "strictly no dogs" play area, dashes into the middle of a football game played by teenagers, nicks ball - a cool looking pro leather thing - and legs it. Teenagers, concerned for cool leather ball, chase Charlie. OH says he counted ten laps of the "strictly no dogs" playing field before Charlie slows enough for OH to grab him. Teenagers not impressed. Charlie thinks it's the best time he's had in months. I can see I've got my "no nicking footballs" programme to rework....
Re: Footballs. Again. Priceless ! ;D ;D ;D I think we've established that dogs are definitely physically and mentally superior to teenage boys ;D ;D ;D (those ones at least )
Re: Footballs. Again. They were out dribbled. And perhaps they'll learn to close gates... ;D ;D ;D It was a big reward for Charlie though. :. We'll have to be on high alert football watch until we can get more training done.
Re: Footballs. Again. Now THAT would have been fun to watch!! We had to stab a football once, as our young Bernese, George got it in his mouth, but it sort of got lodged there. So we deflated it to get it out!!
Re: Footballs. Again. Oh no ;D You've spent so much time on training Charlie not to chase balls - there's no hope for me with Molly!
Re: Footballs. Again. Oh well, it's not so very terrible! ;D Charlie is obsessed by objects - things he views as toys. They are more irresistible if they are moving, but even nicking a hat, a glove, a bag is amazing fun for him. I'm a bit worried about him nicking things from very small children, buckets, spades etc on the beach and kids with toys on the common. That's the one I worry about a bit, but he is super gentle around the kids, just nicks their stuff... It's been very easy to stop him chasing birds, squirrels, what wildlife we come across (even pheasants), people, scooters, and skate boards....or nicking food. That's been the easiest bit of his training, really.
Re: Footballs. Again. LOL. My first Lab, Tammy, was banned from attanding matches at our local rugby ground after she ran onto the pitch and stole the ball. It took 30 players, 3 officials and several spectators to corner her to get the ball back. She thought it was the best chasey game ever!
Re: Footballs. Again. I think it should be a new game. Teams of 12 teenagers, with 2 reserves, attempt to retrieve a leather ball from a Labrador. Rounds last 6 minutes.

Re: Footballs. Again. New game. 12 Primary school children, all dressed neatly in waterproofs, sat on the Common field in a neat line, swapping school shoes for wellies.... How many items of footwear can your Labrador nick before you get a lead on him? Four...and six victory laps. But he delivered them all to hand. Eventually. :-[ :-[ :-[ ;D ;D ;D Don't worry, I spent Sunday with the trainer on "no nicking stuff" exercises, and I'll get on with them first thing tomorrow. I blame the hat on the beach at Christmas...he's regressed terribly since then...
