So I drove away from home, but something was niggling at me.

(Mental Note: Pay attention to these niggles. They Are Important.)

Had I left the cupboard door open where the garbage was? No, I clearly remembered shutting it, and latching it.

Had I left something out on the counter? I mentally reviewed my actions just before I left, which included going through the kitchen, putting bread in counter, putting ketchup in fridge. Nope, couldn't be that. I got everything. I checked.

Just being silly. Off I sailed to the grocery store, back less than a half hour later. Simba greets me at the door, without doing a paw plant on my chest, which, although less exuberant than usual, I was quite happy about as I have been working (again) on the No Jump Up On People At the Door rule.

But I notice, he's licking his lips. I looked around the kitchen. All in place. Dismissed the lip-licking, happy that surf was "down" while I was out. He looks like he wants to go outside, I go to let him out, see that there is still some suspicious lip licking going on.. Hmmm.....

Go back for a closer look. Nothing in the kitchen. Go back out to the front door (for some reason he always carries his booty out there)....a-ha!!

What do I find but the corner of a WHOLE POUND OF BUTTER.... still with wrapper on. All the rest is gone, wrapper included.

I had taken it out of the freezer earlier, left it on the counter to thaw.

Absolutely did not see it in my pre-leaving tidy up and search.

    Ack. :p

    Ach, Simba!
Do you not learn my lad?
    *tsk tsk*
At least eat ALL the evidence.

Good luck weathering the consequences Lisa ::)

Oh dear, SIMBA. Do you have a crate Lisa? I know he is a big lad but for those short outings it could just help or alternatively a tick list on your front door to remind you about putting absolutely everything away no matter how insignificant ;)

Good luck on the end result of that theft

On a positive note he didn't jump up, so well done with that training :)

We had moved the crate to accommodate the Christmas tree and were thinking we would retire it now. He has a new bed for the living room...the crate takes so much room. I just have to be vigilant....check and check again. Which I THOUGHT I did. Yeesh.

Cleaned up one big greasy mess of up-chuck. Hopefully that will be the worst of it. :(

I feel a bit ill, just thinking about that much butter being downed in one sitting. Having to clean it up after its short foray into Simba's innards would just absolutely be the icing on the cake..... Simba, you are a dog who knows what he wants and it's saturated fat.

Oh dear! What am I getting myself into. I must say all these stories of your dogs eating things and the aftermath ALMOST gives me cold feet lol. Puppy arrives in 1.5 weeks Im learning through all these stories. Triple check the kitchen or maybe crate like till forever.

Hope the aftermath isn't too unbearable ;)

To a Labrador, anything that was once living is food. That includes plastic wrap, which counts because, as a petroleum byproduct, it was a carboniferous life form 500 million years ago.

Can you remember me telling you Amy had eaten plastic while out walking? I didnt see it reappear so thought she must have chucked it up soon after eating. But a whole 7 days later she woke me up in the night and was very pleased with a massive piece of plastic she must have only just got rid off!! I hadn't known it was that big!

    Naughty Simba ;)
Your posts of counter surfing have really made me check everything before I go anywhere, including just leaving the kitchen for a few mins with food on the dudes!! Harley has recently started counter surfing, but luckily she hasn't managed to get her paws on anything ;)

O Simba! At least we know he can eat pretty much anything without being ill now.

I do have sympathy - I go round my front room with a check llist before Charlie is allowed in (Charlie nicks anything, not just food, and then runs round with it which is not allowed). Yesterday we did our sweep - remote controls on the mantle, slippers put away, desk clear, log basket on top of the telly...check, check. Charlie found a bit of kitchen roll behind the sofa and we had a mad bum run in excitement. Only cut short because he had a house line on which I grabbed. It's so easy to miss just one thing.

    Re: For Pete's sake....

The good thing about the clean-up was that he had managed to get most of it on the tiles...just a tiny bit on the carpet runner in the entry way. Phew. I was up twice last night letting him out, he was restless and I didn't want to face cleaning up the carpet in the middle of the night

All seems well today....I just gave him rice for breakfast but that has stayed down so I think we're past it.

Although he does seem to be spending more time outside today than usual....I dread to think of how helpful he is being on cleaning up outside.....

Lol too funny. Went out an got a nice new big crate. Lots and lots of chew toys and treats etc. kids think her bed will be the first thing to go. I bet the Lego. Lol I'm hoping the kitchen benches will be safe at least for a little while lol.

I hope you had some extra butter in the fridge and didn't have to go back out for more Lisa.

Thanks...luckily I had another pound in the freezer which I put IN THE CUPBOARD.

Thus deterred, while we were out Simba found a bag with Swedish Berries and chocolate covered peanuts, and ate those instead.

    Hubby's fault this time.
