This thread sort of goes under health.

Has anyone got any ideas of what fruit would be safe for puzzle to eat, she loves apple but i don't know what other fruit she can try/eat. Barley does not like fruit so he is safe but puzzle will eat almost anything so i would like to know at least what fruits to stay away from

The only thing i can think of that's got a reputation (whether deserved or not) as being a problem would be grapes. Some sites list avocadoes as a problem but in fact they are ok (not safe for birds though). I think that most fruits are safe for dogs. Things like pears, bananas, peaches, mangoes.... I'd just take out any seeds or pits to be on the safe side :)

Lilly likes everything just about (except the grapes - she seems to naturally leave dropped ones thankfully as they are plentiful in our house - and raisins/sultanas etc never in her presence)
Favourites are banana, apple, melon, strawberries, raspberries (particularly whilst wandering in our woods ;) )
She scoffs windfallen plums in our garden (yep....its squishy poop season...) and the odd pear, though they are inedible and too hard for us.
Not entirely sure she is as fond of the brambles, but there are just coming into season in the woods.

I have raspberries and blackberries in the garden - now the fruit starts just above the level that a 6 month old lab puppy can reach. He loves them, and can sniff out ripe ones from not! (But unfortunately knocks all the unripe ones off in getting to the ripe ones - he is SUCH a messy picker ::) ).

I have the coolest picture of him watching on my laptop Caddie pick berries! Shame he can't pick up the other skills she demonstrates as quickly. ::)

I'll post it when I've got Flickr sorted (new PC messing everything up I think).

    Lucky you Lisa,
They can cause kidney failure in dogs, as can raisins. A quick google says something like 32g/kg dog can be fatal, which is a heck of a lot, but I guess just like in humans, some dogs will be much more sensitive to even smaller amounts.
I would imagine that one or two isn't going to kill your dog, but I would be cautious all the same.

I have seen two dogs die of renal failure after eating a slice of christmas cake (obviously loads of raisins). Some dogs are incredibly sensitive to grapes and raisins.

That is pretty scary - I remember on FB last christmas there were lots of reminders about keeping christmas cake, mince pies AND chocolate christmas tree decorations well out of reach.
Better for the waistline not to have them at all :p

Eek! I guess I had better be careful about picking them, then - once Simba sees me doing something he's got to do it too. Usually they don't drop off, just wither on the vine, so if he doesn't see me picking them hopefully he won't get the idea to eat them....

    Here's my vine....

    And some of the grapes.....

...not quite ripe yet. It gets tricky from here on in....early frost could mean trouble....

Re: Fruit safe for dogs to eat

We have a grape vine too and my previous Lab used to scoff all the grapes he could every autumn. That was before I'd heard of grapes being a potential problem. Some dogs are fine, and some aren't, it seems. Going to play it safe with Obi though - no Christmas cake for him! :)

My old dog also used to love watermelon. One day I made the mistake of giving him a bit with the skin on and part of the stalk still attached. Well, he ate the lot and the stalk caused an intestinal blockage. That was a bit touch and go. So avoid thick rind and stalks. The interior bit is a nice treat though, especially on a warm day.
