I recently noticed that Sam was emitting a very strange smell , coming from his neck, but nowhere else on his body . He had been scratching a fair bit but had been treated for fleas and ticks , I`d put it down to spores from the bracken he charges through most days, until I noticed the smell which was a sort of greasy, yeasty smell . So , Vets this morning and he does indeed have a fungal infection on his chest, most likely culprit being a thorn , as he does tend to hurl himself through rough cover when training . He had a steroid shot, steroid tablets , antibiotics and an anti fungal wash to douse him with every day . Just thought it worth mentioning that , whilst Labs often do have a definite smell about them, if you notice a strong yeasty type of smell, its worth checking out, just in case x
Re: Fungal Infection Kate it's a good thing you took him in. I think it was one of Heidrun's spaniels who got a nasty abscess as a result of a blackthorn.
Re: Fungal Infection I did question myself Karen , wondering if I was making a fuss over nothing much, but it was the pungent aroma that clinched it
Re: Fungal Infection Poor Sam the indignity of being washed every day. Hope it clears up quickly Kate. I shall now go and smell my dogs ! :
Re: Fungal Infection Good detective work Kate! The nose knows, as they say....hope Sam is all better soon!
Re: Fungal Infection Oh Kate,I've been away from the forum a couple of days so I'm late asking after Sam.i hope he's a bit better now he's had a few days of meds.I guess swimming is off the walk menu for a little while but hopefully not for too long x
Re: Fungal Infection Thanks for asking Angela , I really appreciate your care x Unfortunately , Sam hasn't been too great today so his steroid dose has had to be halved and we watch him for a couple of days . Its odd , Millie has no reaction to them , she is still on three a week for allergies and is fine, but Sam really wasn't too good , was needing to wee every couple of hours ( even in the night ) and very subdued xx
Re: Fungal Infection I suppose they are just like us ..different people react differently but you wouldn't think Sam would be knocked about by that dose with him being the size he is and little Millie being ok.... I hope it doesn't slow down him getting over it by too much,I'm sorry he's out of sorts, they break your heart with they are quiet and not themselves....big pat to Sam and I hope Millie is cheering him up x
Re: Fungal Infection I hope Sam is feeling more himself today kate. How long does he have to have the steroids and the wash for? :-\
Re: Fungal Infection
I hope Sam is feeling more himself today kate.
Me too, Poor lad
Re: Fungal Infection Thank you for asking , glad to report that he is a lot better today which is a massive relief as he really was off the hooks yesterday and was worrying me a lot . He has a reduced dose of steroids for another week , plus the anti fungal wash which he doesn't mind having applied at all, bless him . The unpleasant smell has gone thank goodness, in fact his whole coat is gleaming I know that he feels loads better because he wanted to retrieve this morning, was eager and full of beans , thanks again xxx
