Good desensitization protocol for resource guarding?

    Bit of background/context.

My lab, Ender, is about 15 months. He had resource guarding behavior as a pup they we worked on quite a bit and reinforce often.

Now I can approach, pick up food bowl, handle, etc without issue.

however, he’s still exhibits the behavior in some situations….

    * With sticks and balls with other dogs.
    * with other dogs and food (Does not want the other dog anywhere in eye site when feeding, will chase and “scuffle”)
    * with humans with certain high value items like (oddly) empty food bowls, certain play objects

I’m looking for a good desensitization protocol for all of these, with the top priority on guarding with humans.

This is the one that’s most challenging as Ender knows if there’s “treats on the table” so to speak. If you have a pouch or a treat in your hand, he immediately snaps into obedience mode, drops the item, shows no guarding behavior, and patiently awaits the exchange.

So how can we bridge that gap? So the behavior is extinguished regardless of whether you have a reward handy or not?

Cheers. And thanks for any tips!

I suggest the book 'Mine' by Jean Donaldson.
