At last, some good news for barley ;D He's Happy, full of energy and is wanting to play and go for walks ;D. It is so so so so so so nice to see him happy again. He did not even complain last night when he went for a walk with his coat on as it was freezing cold, almost tempted with boots as there was lots of salt on the ground and it was icy and frosty but we braved it. Washed his feet with warm water when we got it, no fuss from him , no lood of water to clean up afterwards as he stood still and did not walk off ;D. Very pleased, he was so happy to go out for a walk, skipping along like he was a young happy healthy dog again. He is even playing with tennis balls, playing etch and catch down the hall, like he is a puppy, having un with not a care in the world . Maybe he is just getting exited as it is cold enough to snow, and he loves playing in the snow ;D
Re: Good news at last Ah I'm glad he's having fun because I know that means you will be too Annabelle rather than worrying about him x hope you get some snow ( sorry everyone else,I mean nice snow that is pretty and fun for a day and then melts away like magic xxx) x
Re: Good news at last That's great annabelle glad barley is feeling bouncy. ;D That's the best type of snow Angela just long enough to have fun. ;D
Re: Good news at last Must have missed your original post. What was up with Barley? Glad he's better again.
Being a grumpy old man, is what was up with him. And his hips were quite sore, and he was generally quite down. During the day he is still a grumpy old man who wants to sleep infront of the fire, but come past 6 o'clock he is a changed dog, running around, shredding his bed, shredding tennis balls, playing with puzzle. I am sure he must have been listening in on conversations about getting him x-rayed, but no backing out now, it will only cause him more harm by delaying them another 6 weeks
Re: Good news at last what has the vet said up to now Annabelle? do i remember correctly that s/he said she couldn't tell much without x-rays but suspects arthritus?
She suggested that it could be either HD, arthritis or a crutiate ligament injury which she thinks is the least likely outcome, as she would expect to see him a lot more lame, but since it has been going on for so long he is compensating a lot
Re: Good news at last Now this is starting to get anoying :-\ He is into everything, especially in the evenings, wanting to go for walks, shredding tennis balls, bouncing off the sofa like its a springboard, playing with puzzle, shredding his bed, refuising to go to sleep. Then after all this he crashes and struggles when he tries to get up again, so it can't be doing him any good, but he is ejoying himself, he has not growled at puzzle for over 3 weeks now, before it was about 1 growl a week. He is wolfing his food down, even without wet food on it, which is unusual of him. He is drinking more, but he has been a lot more active and running around. Between the two of them they go through 2-3 bowls of water a day, plus whatever he drinks outside from the 3 various bowls scattered around the place. Torn between stopping him having his mad moments, or just letting him get on with them as it can't be doing him any good, and more likely causing more harm to his already bad hips. :-\

This isn't good - it seems that when he is excited, the doggy adrenaline kicks in, but he pays for it later. There isn't a dilemma here (we are in a different position to you, of course) - the dog doesn't get to do things that cause him to be in pain or stiff later. But we've worked up from this being not much at all, to quite a lot. He is on 5 walks a day, 3 full hydro sessions a week, and 4 physio sessions a day. Jumping around, twisting, any thing that is a shock, rather than steady, is out though.

The differences between the two of the are that 1) charlie is a puppy and has lots more energy, 2) barley has not got a diagnosed problem yet and 3) he only gets 1 walk a day, usually around 20mins of road walking, some days more others a lot less depends on how he is feeling and what the weather is like, the colder it is the shorter his walks as cold makes him worse, so he has to suffer are wear his warm coat. We also have to be carful about road salt boots are not an option anymore so his feet have to be cleaned after every walk
