I think Beulah might have worms, I found when I have picked up her number 2's for the last 2 days I can see what looks like grains of rice The breeder said he wormed her the day before she came home & she is due to have second jab next Thursday - what would you do? Why do these things happen on a Friday?
Re: Grains of rice Sounds like tapeworm. The breeder gave me a card with the dates and batch number of all the worming treatments that Charlie had, and I gave this to the vet who picked up where the card ended. I had to give panacur, then drontal and Charlie is still on drontal once a month and will need it until he is six months. So I think it's just a case of asking the vet for the appropriate course of worming treatment.
Re: Grains of rice Nothing urgent then? I wondered if I should take in on Monday or wait til Thursday.
Re: Grains of rice I would tend to say take her on Monday, if its a bad infestation she will need a strong worming dose or even a course of them , they can cause nasty upset tums and make them feel quite rotten, hope she is ok
Re: Grains of rice If there's an evening surgery I'd take her NOW. You don't want poop with worms in it in your garden or anywhere where children or other dogs could get infected. Also it must be unpleasant for Beulah.
Re: Grains of rice Thanks guys - when you're sleep deprived & un-experienced this is a good place to turn to! I'm taking her in the morning.
Re: Grains of rice Yep, get it sorted. Otis came from his breeder, who had used drontal, with worms, he sicked up a big roundworm, so the vet gave him a treatment and also a tablet. You want something really effective, which the vet will have. Yucky aren't they ! Maggie
Re: Grains of rice It’s good advice to get to the vet, get the pup on a regular schedule of worming, and keep it up to date. And check with the breeder exactly what the pup had, and when, so you can tell the vet. But although it’s yucky, most puppies have worms unfortunately – they are even born with some types transferred from the mother. And one reason they have to be dosed up so frequently is because it takes a while to kill all the worms through quite a long life cycle, plus they are prone to getting them often.
Re: Grains of rice Yup def yucky, poor little thing. Wondering what to put on a hot wash next - not her of course! x
Re: Grains of rice And if it's tapeworms... check the flea treatment is up to date (well, do that anyway)... sorry, more yucky.
Re: Grains of rice God, we're talking about poo, tapeworms and fleas - and I think it's interesting. I've gotta get my life back!
Re: Grains of rice lol thanks guys I needed a giggle - could murder a glass of wine & hubby on lates tonight so I can't get to the shop!
Re: Grains of rice I have the vet prescribe everything worm and flea and tick etc wise a) because I don't know what he needs really (extensive experience of worms in horses, nothing in dogs ) b) it's just easier c) some of the drugs the vet uses are not available otherwise. But if you know what you are doing or have the time to look it up...but with an obvious existing worm infestation I'd see a vet, and not hang about.
Re: Grains of rice We use an annual heartworm injection (given by vet) then three-monthly Milbemax (given by us, bought on internet) and Advantage for fleas (have taken to giving this only if we see a flea, it's given by us, bought on internet). Not sure if you can get Milbemax easily in the UK but it's a good wormer and I like only having to do it every three months. Tapeworm is yucky. I agree with all the advice to worm sooner rather than later.
Re: Grains of rice Been to the vets & they gave us one of the Milbemax - sorted! They have told us to up her food a bit as she is constantly eating stuff she shouldn't be - mostly sticks & stones! Thanks for your help
