Greedy gingernut managed to scoff 2 days worth of barley's food and supplements whilst me and dad were out . She has had a walk and done some SAR training today but seems abnormally quite, and does not seem with it, if you sort of get what i mean, sort of spaced out a bit. She has drunk 2 bowls of water dry. The most worrying thing is that her chest has ballooned, it is wider than her shoulders, and it just does not look right and is concerning me. I will try to upload a picture so you can see what i mean :-\. Dad says see how she is in the morning, but she is not right, and i am not happy with the way she is, its very worrying :'(. She did not have any tea for obvious reasons, but i only noticed her large chest after tea time has finished, when she came in from going outside
Re: Greedy gingernut got me worried I don't want to scaremonger but that doesn't sound great. Is there a chance she has bloat? I would be phoning the vet..... I've only ever had Riley so have very little experience but the distended chest/abdomen would worry me too.
Re: Greedy gingernut got me worried Yes, I would call the vet. Don't let her drink any more water before you get advice from the vet.

[/quote] Dad keeps saying that she is fine and there is nothing wrong with her but she is not right. He is hard enough to convince either dog needs the vet when it is not life threatening, but bloat is serious, but i am a worry pot :-[. Bloat was my first thought but she is not uncomfortable or in pain when i touch her belly and chest or press quite firmly
Re: Greedy gingernut got me worried There was a previous article about bloat on the main site http://www.thelabradorsite.com/bloat-in-labradors-what-are-the-risks/ The worrying bit for me is where it says Classic symptoms of bloat are a dog with a hard swollen stomach that is clearly uncomfortable and is trying to be sick but unable to bring anything up. In some dogs symptoms may be less obvious. Constant retching is a real warning sign. If you are worried that your dog might have bloat, speed is of the essence. If this happens to your dog late evening, don’t be tempted to wait until morning. By then your dog may be dead. Phone your vet to let him know you are on your way and leave immediately. The faster the dog is treated, the less the internal damage will be. I would discuss this with your dad
Re: Greedy gingernut got me worried Annabelle you know Puzzle better than anyone, phone the vet better to be safe than sorry xx
Re: Greedy gingernut got me worried oh please get your dad to phone the vet hope puzzle is well soon xx
Re: Greedy gingernut got me worried How much kibble would you say she ate, measured in cups? Is there an emergency vet you can call to get an opinion? An emergency vet will be open and they will be very used to getting calls from people saying "My Labrador has just eaten.....". They can ask you about symptoms and advise you. I really, really would at least try to get a vet opinion. Can you phone a vet yourself?

Re: Greedy gingernut got me worried I have no idea if that's enough to cause bloat. Hopefully someone else does. So worrying. I would call a vet. I hope this is all a false alarm and she is fine. Hugs and finger crossed for you.
Re: Greedy gingernut got me worried Well that is not an enormous amount. Hopefully it's just that she feels a bit uncomfortable and super full. But if you think her behaviour is not normal I would still be trying to check with a vet. Better to over-react than the alternative
Re: Greedy gingernut got me worried Simba TWICE has eaten quite a lot of a bag of kibble, other than drinking a whole lot of water, he was fine. But he is older than Puzzle, of course. Not sure if bloat has to do with how much they eat, I know it's the guts twisting inside but other than that I don't have too much knowledge of it. I would give the emergency vet a call, if you can find one. Better safe than sorry.
Re: Greedy gingernut got me worried Let us know how puzzle is this morning, Annabelle? Hoping all is well with her.
Re: Greedy gingernut got me worried Had a sleep less night due to gingernut We ended up phoning the out of hours vet for advise, they said as long as she was not trying to retch and was not panting and in obvious pain just to keep an eye on her and if she gets worse bring her strait in. Glad they said that as it is a good 45 min drive to the nearest out of hours vet, with a fee of £95 for a consultation . Every sound i heard made me jump last night, i was listening out incase she started to retch or wine to say that she wanted to go out to the loo. Cam down this morning to an explosion of runny poo and over her and her cage, as she slept in it . She went straight outside and done another 5 runny poo's, no breakfast and chicken and rice for a couple of days to settle her tummy. We have some Pro Colin handy if her poo's are still runny tomorrow. She had a bath with deodorizing shampoo and got washed and washed and washed down with water, but still stinks of poo, her bedding has been sprayed washed and disinfected. I put some spray on her to try and mask the poo smell, but she still stinks . She had a walk this morning done a few more watery poo's in the bushes that could not be picked up, only a few drops of slop so nothing major and not on the path. Still very quite, even on her walk, walked nicely even with barley and dad, heelwork having a rest as i don't want to give her any treats so her tummy can have time to settle down. She had had a few bits of carrot to munch on as mum is making a roast dinner.
Re: Greedy gingernut got me worried I'm sorry for your sleepless night, but very glad you got over the phone advice from the vet last night. Also glad it seems to be nothing worse than a very upset stomach... which has obviously been unpleasant enough to deal with, but not as serious as it might have been. Hope her stomach settles. Clare
