So the past 2 days Maisie has infrequently done a bit of a cough/hack… that "precursor" to a dog vomit we're all familiar with. Yet doesn't vomit. It was almost like hiccups last night which kept culminating in a sort of "burp" or like she would have thrown up but nothing came up. She had food fairly close to bedtime and even had a drink in the night so I would think it's not because there isn't anything to come up. I did stick my finger a bit into her throat and felt around as best I could to see if there was something stuck she is trying to cough up - doesn't seem like it. Still eating/drinking. Bit of diarrhea last night but solid poo this morning.

So… does anyone know what this might be or have had this happen before? It's not a "cough" type cough, it's really more of that hacking precursor to a vomit, but with no vomit happening.

Sounds like a gag reflex thing maybe??? I'd be keeping a close eye on her - both ends - and if it doesn't resolve itself by morning, I'd be taking her to the vet for a "check and make sure" visit.

That's a puzzle to me,but you know what I'm going to say though....ever the cautious one I'd be off to the vet .let us know how she is tomorrow and if you discover the cause x

A sore throat could lead to hacking/retching. Or...have you done a thorough check inside her mouth to see if there's anything wedged into the roof of it?

I'd be inclined to go to the vet for a check if it's persistant.

I know you say it's not really a cough type thing but I have seen very similar symptoms as a precursor to kennel cough, so best to keep an eye on her just in case.

Also, could it possibly be backwards sneezing? Penny does this sometimes and can kinda sound like hacking.

    Re: Hacking but not vomiting?

She had a kennel cough type thing a month or so ago… I took her to the vet and she said she maybe had a very mild case. This is a bit different and doesn't seem triggered by the same sort of thing (she has been excited and exercised without doing it this morning and exercise/excitement triggered the kennel type cough).

She hasn't done it since this morning and has eaten her breakfast and gone on a walk just fine.. I'll do another throat investigation to see if I can find anything lodged in there. If she has another episode of it I'll call the vet and make an appointment.

I'm not sure if its backwards sneezing - I did l ook that up and see but it was happening fairly regularly for little bits so I would think a sneeze would just be once or twice?

Edit - I just did a bit more of a dig around her mouth (bless her that she lets me do this type of thing without too much fuss). She had a piece of cardboard on her tongue and I'm wondering now if she didn't maybe eat a bit of cardboard and it got stuck and she was trying to dislodge it last night. She had a huge cardboard destruction time last night so it's quite possible. Maybe I shouldn't let her have cardboard anymore if she eats it.

    - I just picked up all her cardboard boxes and pieces so she couldn't get anymore (an act most sadly protested) and found another molar while picking up, ha. Cardboard seems to be her preferred molar extraction method as I recently found a molar when cleaning up her cardboard pile before this!

Penny is also a cardboard eater and our house is littered with toilet roll tubes and cardboard boxes she's pilfered out of the recycling and chewed up!

She shreds them into these really annoying sized peices that are too big to go up the vacuum but small enough it takes you ages to pick them out of the carpet with difficulty!

Sounds like progress; my thoughts were kennel cough until your cardboard findings. Hope it's all settled down now :)

She might even have swallowed one of her baby teeth, which possibly scratched her throat and is making her do what in a human we would call 'clearing your throat'.

Yes, the baby tooth was another thought, but I think she's down to just her 3 canines left to go... although who knows as I'm still finding teeth! I definitely think she swallowed either cardboard or something scratchy and she was trying to clear her throat. Hasn't repeated yet today so crossing my fingers it is done.

    Re: Hacking but not vomiting?

She's still doing it… phoned up the vet, they think it's kennel cough (? AGAIN? jeez Maisie) possibly.. .mentioned tracheal collapse but I think I'd see some other symptoms in that case (retching without vomiting is one of those symptoms, but also out of breath, weird breathing, collapse, blue gums, etc… she's totally fine otherwise).

I didn't think it ws since she was coughing at night not when she was active, but then we met someone on our walk and he gave her a big pat, and then she went "hack!" after meeting him (she gets excited to say hi) and then she rushed into the house to see my partner who she loves and she went "hack!" so… I think possibly kennel cough? Sheeeeeesh.

So she has an appt on Monday, bu they don't generally give anything for kennel cough anyways, except a cough suppressant if it's really intense, so we might go in, might not (depending on whether she shows other symptoms or if it stops, that is). We agreed I'd phone on Monday and update and see what they think.

Oh, what a pain :( At least if it's kennel cough you know it's just a matter of getting over it. The 'quarantine' period isn't so much fun though. Hope she gets over it fast.

At least if it's kennel cough she can have her cardboard back. I picked all the bits up off the floor and she just went into her crate, banged about, and emerged with a piece of cardboard she must have stashed in there for "emergencies" … silly baby.

    Poor maisie!
When pongo had kennel cough we gave him runny honey.... just a very thin coating on the back of a spoon and let him lick it off very slowly, so it could coat his throat. It really did seem to help a lot, and of course he thought he was in heaven....

Hugs and licks from the two of us

Hmm I will try that! I've been giving her ice cubes and what not to try to soothe her throat but that seems even better.

I dreamt she was snotting up green goo that I then collected to take to the vet… ick! Luckily no goo yet, she is sneezing more than normal but didn't have the same retching type cough this morning as she did the past 2 mornings. She had maybe 2-3 coughs, not the same intensity as before, this morning, so it's still something but maybe already getting a bit better, at least I hope so.

She thanks you all for the compliments and agrees that yes she is quite gorgeous… :D
