Does anyone know if being on Royal Canin low fat gastro intestinal diet cause hair loss, as our Labrador has thinning of his coat around the neck, thighs and stomach. The bonus side to this dog food is no problems with his Pancreatitis and loves it. Apart from the coat problems he is fit and well. The only other thing we could think of was using Frontline Flea Treatment. We would be so grateful of any help as the vets have done a full blood screen and ruled out thyroid problems and his skin is slightly flaky on some parts of the body and no sores. Any ideas anybody. Re: Hair Loss on a Labrador male with Chronic Pancreatitus and on special diet I never had any problems with air loss when Harley was on that food. I changed her food as her tummy is so sensitive she could even tolerate Royal Canin Gastro.

Hello Stacia, Its started to really thin out over the last couple of months, we read some story's about frontline which where a bit worrying. My lab has a very thin coat on her chest area and legs but it is caused by her excessively licking and scratching due to her allergies. She is allergic to numerous different foods but also house, dust and storage mites. I wonder if your dog might have allergies too. There could be something in the food that is causing an allergic response ? It could also be a response to chemicals in flea treatments. I stopped using them on my dogs 2 years ago! Chloe

Hair loss seems to be mentioned on quite a lot of the EPI sites (mainly they are GSD sites as they seem most commonly affected) I think the suggestion is it is linked to nutritional lack though, and you saying he is otherwise fit and well would seem to be against this. They seem to be keen on supplementing with Vitamin B12 too. Hopefully it will settle down. Has your lab been diagnosed with it for long?

Re: Hair Loss on a Labrador male with Chronic Pancreatitus and on special diet Hi There, Dexter is a neutered boy,2 years old....he's been on RC gastro since he was 7 months and whilst he hasn't got a massive lab coat ( I think due to our hot climate ) and is thin on his thighs and tummy hi coat is consistent so I would say we've not experienced hair loss.

He also has numerous food allergies and indoor environmental allergies. One of these allergies is to storage mites - which rules out dry dog food. I'm wondering if your boy may have a similar allergy? My dog's coat is excellent - apart from his paws, which he continues to nibble at.

He told me to take it gently at first so as not to give her the runs. Hope it helps. She was not a Lab, so was a bit smaller.

I was going to suggest that you tried the food I put my dog on and he hasn't scratched since, but I wondered about the oil content. It is a dried food but do all dried foods have storage mites, I didn't think they did?

[/quote] Please, please do NOT give any kind of oil to a dog with pancreatitic issues - it could actually prove fatal.

We would never risk our dogs health at all but thanks anyway for the warnings, We live in the united kingdom and have a wonderful vet. We only ever treat Buddy with what the vet tells us.....Thanks all for all of your advice, it means a lot that you all care.
Re: Hair Loss on a Labrador male with Chronic Pancreatitus and on special diet I would seriously consider feeding a raw food diet as this will avoid any chemicals going into your Buddys body and this may well help , I am still a novice but i am sure i read some where that feeding Pig Pancreas to a dog aids dogs with pancreatic issues such as EPI . Since feeding Jake a raw diet without any previous health issues he is so healthy his coat is really soft and glossy , Really hope things get better for Buddy soon . Best Regards Mike & Jake
