Now our Fox Red Lab casts a lot of hair every day but we are starting to get a little worried as of today my wife managed to pull a small clump of hair from his back near his bum and he has a little bit of dandruff .

We groom him twice daily most days with a Furminator are we grooming him to often and creating a problem . Thanks Mike

Hi Mike , I groom very rarely indeed, maybe once every month or two . My lad tends to do lots of retrieving through this bushes so he sort of self grooms, but there is also a theory that over grooming can actually contribute to more hair loss . I dont know if this is true but I certainly dont think you need to be grooming twice a day :)

Thanks to you both i think it just became a habit in the 10 weeks we have had him as he has been molting over a number of weeks , His hair is much thicker now so i think he is done for now . Mike

I haven't ever groomed Penny since we've had her, I think twice a day is definately too much, especially for a relatively short coated breed like lab, and especially with a furminator.
Penny doesn't moult massively but does have a bath about once a week as it's so wet and muddy here at the moment. In the dry weather she gets bathed maybe once a month?

The winter coat can come out in tufts (especially from the butt area!). If it looked like a tuft of undercoat (softer and finer) I wouldn't be worried :)

Agree that it'd be a good plan to cut down on the grooming intensity. And maybe now switch to a normal dog brush or comb.

Definitely twice a day is too much, especially with a fulminator which really should only be used at those awful times when your dog is shedding all of his undercoat.. this happens twice a year with most labs. Regarding the dandruff, if your dog has dry skin, a fish oil capsule in with the food really works wonders.

Thanks for your replies he was shedding a lot at one point and does cast everyday but not as much now thankfully .

We only have to empty the hoover every 3 days now , We have a softer dog comb so going to use that my wife is a little heavy handed so i do think it has just been a case of over grooming after his major shedding .

When we first got him his coat was much thicker but he was picked up as stray in Southern Ireland 6 weeks or so before he came to us in England . Mike
