Hi all! I'm after some advice, we have a 7 month old choc lab who the vets suspects has OCD in his shoulder. He has been on anti inflammatory's for 9 days and is due to go back when the course is finished, he will x ray then and we will have to wait until he is 14 months if he needs the operation to rectify the problem. Has anyone dealt with this condition before that can advise? He's being lead walked twice a day and resting at home.
Re: Has anyone dealt with OCD in their lab before? I have not experienced this with a dog but I just wanted to welcome you to the forum
Re: Has anyone dealt with OCD in their lab before? Welcome! Welcome! No experience, sorry. I know there are people on the forum who have though, and they will certainly help when they come along.
Re: Has anyone dealt with OCD in their lab before? Hi there. Welcome from me and 4 year old Lilly. Lilly was diagnosed with Hip Dysplasia before she was a year old and is pretty well adapted and maintained on NSAIDs, no surgery as yet. The vets initially tbought it was her knee. we have been through the total rest, build up of on lead only exercise, 2 hrs a day on lead, so I can empatise with you although have no info re OCD specifically. They are such a worry. Hope someone can help, and we can support you on the forum. jac

Re: Has anyone dealt with OCD in their lab before? Hi there. OCD in the shoulder joint can be diagnosed by plain xrays in some cases, but to image the little flap of cartilage better most orthopaedic vets will put some xray contrast medium into the joint as this highlights it better for you. If the pain settles down on anti-inflammatory drugs then conservative medical management is indicated. Persistently painful joints are best operated on, and the best technique is to use arthroscopy to go into the joint, remove the flap of cartilage causing all the problems and curette underneath. This is the least invasive technique and is remarkably successful in experienced hands. Hope this helps.
Re: Has anyone dealt with OCD in their lab before? Hi there, yes my yellow lab Meg was diagnosed with OCD and hip dysplasia when she was 8, 6 years ago. She had a course of injections and was referred to hydrotherapy. We went twice a week to hydro for 4 years and now go just once a week. Plus she had to lose weight, although that wouldn't be a problem with your pup. She is prescribed painkillers but honestly can't remember the last time she had any. The hydro worked well for her. No surgery needed. Because your dog is so young, I don't know what treatment that would be best. Good luck and let us know how things go.
