So we have a 18 week old pup at the moment and a few days ago we seen online about a lab that was dumped on a road and left behind. He is skinny and just looks so sad so i thought maybe we could step in and adopt him. They say hes 3-4 years old and comfortable around other dogs ( they only really base this around how he acts in the kennel next to other dogs.) Since we are going back to work in september and Gus our pup will be alone from 9-3 (family call in at 12 and let him out for a play and short walk around the street) will him and the rescue dog have eachother for company? Or is it too late to have them socialise around eachother to leave them alone together in 2 weeks? I dont know what to do but i would love to help the rescue dog and he would make a great place in our family. What are your thoughts? Sorry if this is in the wrong thread!
Hi there, there are potential pros and cons to this. And I think there are probably more cons than pros at this point. It would be nice for your pup to have company during the day. However it may be much more difficult to find (and keep ) willing dog walkers if there are two dogs involved. And you cannot predict how well your rescue dog will adapt to a puppy. And let's face it, puppies can be annoying I think it's a great idea to rescue another dog at some point, but I'm a firm believer in picking the right time to do that, rather than doing it on impulse. I'd be tempted to let the puppy grow and mature while benefitting from the family's undivided attention, and think about getting a companion for him in a year or so. There will always be lovely deserving dogs needing your help, but this might not be the best time for you and your puppy.
