can anyone recommend a specific head collar for our Lab. I can handle him on a half check collar but my wife, who has been very ill is not strong enough to deal with his occasional lunge like when he sees a bird or another dog. Can anyone recommend a good head collar is the canny head collar any good?

How about a front fastening harness instead? This pulls the dog's body around, which I think might be preferable to pulling its head round (perhaps suddenly, in a snapping action, if the problem is a quick powerful lunge). The disadvantage of front fastening harnesses is that can alter a dog's gait and make them walk a little lopsided, but I haven't heard many people mention this is a big problem in practice.

Sorry, I forgot to say - welcome to the forum! What is your dog's name? How old etc.?

Hi there...welcome to the forum,I used a front fastening harness as an aid to retraining a very enthusiastic puller ....it didn't imorove the issue on its own the training has helped that( still on going for lunging! ::))but it did help me have more control,I think it reminded Dexter and most importantly, stopped that horrible pulling on the neck and gasping breathing so they are very useful.the item that just stopped him pullong instantly was a gentle leader head collar ,but I didn't really like it or want to rely on it so we only used it for a very short while x

Welcome from me Helen, Hattie 6 years and Charlie 3 years. I use a front fastening harness with the option of using it on the back too. I found Charlie spent more time trying to remove the head collar as he disliked it so much. Like Angela said it's just a training aid and loose lead walking still has to be practised but we are at the stage of using a flat collar most of the time with Charlie now but it has taken a LONG time but worth it

Have fun on the forum. :) x

Welcome to the forum from me and Harley (7 months). I have spinal problems and use a back fastening harness. It has taken a lot of training with stopping every few steps to stop her pulling too much. How old is he? I also use a lot of 'high value' treats to teach lead walking. She walks very differently with me than with my husband. I think she knows she can't pull me :)

Thanks for your helpful replies and your welcome to the forum. In response to Julie he is a Golden Lab . His kennel name is Mums Golden Boy but we call him Dexter! He will be 2 in June and is basically just a big puppy. He is desperate always to play with other dogs and loves water.

    Hi and welcome

I've used lots of different head collars with Penny - halti, gentle leader, and gencon all in one. I've had varying degrees of success for varying lengths of time and then the same thing happens every time.

Once she has learnt to wear it, we use it well for a while and everything is great, then she starts to pull against it. The result then is a dog who pulls just as much as before but is now putting strain on their neck resulting in tension all through their neck and shoulders, which is not good.

I used to think that head collars were a magic fix, however they take time to train the dog to get used to wearing it - sometimes weeks, and even then the dog can still pull with it on.

We have resorted to going back to basics in teaching walking on a loose lead. I initially used the head collar when we started this but now we can walk on just a collar and lead and have been making good progress.
