My dog, who was 1 in August is doing pretty well with his training. One issue continues to be walking on the lead. Despite following advice from everyone he continues to walk a pace or so in front of me. I can get him to come back in line with me but soon as I stop talking or tapping he reverts to the forward position. If I stop he does! If I turn he does but due to his position it's not always easy. Am a bit lost. I have done the whole take three steps and treat taking half an hour to go down the road it is hard work and then he slips straight back!
Re: Heel walking one step forward two backwards Holly used to walk in front. I started carrying a smelly treat in my hand as it held her attention and made her walk alongside me. Every hundred yards or so I'd make her sit and give her the treat, then we'd start again. After a few weeks she got the message: if I hold back I get a treat, if I walk ahead or pull I get nothing. Nowadays she walks alongside me on her lead most of the time. Once or twice on a walk I'll get a treat out just to remind her.
Re: Heel walking one step forward two backwards He has to get the idea that nothing good happens when he is ahead of you - I.e. He doesn't go to the park, or get to run off lead, or get a treat. Walking at heel, even for a couple of steps, gets rewarded. I know it all sounds easy, but I understand it's not. I still struggle with Poppy walking properly to heel - not that she pulls, but she does like to walk a half step ahead!
Re: Heel walking one step forward two backwards Agree with the above , it can seem to take an age , but the penny does eventually drop . Like Karens Poppy , my Sam also walks very slightly ahead on lead but if he isn't pulling , it doesn't bother me too much x
