Hello everyone!!! I'm Mandy and will soon be a proud parent of a yellow male lab called Rio. I am so excited to bring him home in 2 weeks time. Before registering, I was just browsing this forum and found it so helpful that I thought I should join.
Re: Hello from soon to be puppy parent Hi Mandy and welcome This forum has been a godsend for me and hopefully you will gets lots of good advice too don't be afraid to ask any questions at all, no matter how silly they might sound
Re: Hello from soon to be puppy parent Hi Mandy and a warm welcome from me Helen, Hattie 6 years and rescue boy Charlie 3 years. We look forward to hearing all about Rio, how exciting and not long to wait. xx
Re: Hello from soon to be puppy parent Thanks Naya. I am sure it will become such a resource once I get Rio home. Just wondering, how did everyone transport their little ones home? The drive from my house to the breeders is 2-2.5 hrs and I know the crate is the safest way to transport Rio home. However, the crate we are getting is huge so that Rio can grow into it and am not sure it will fit in the car. Even if it can, it will be in the boot (my family have a range rover type car) though it would be difficult for him to see me from there. Should I buy a smaller fabric pet carrier as I am not too comfortable carrying him on my lap for 2-2.5 hours? Thanks in advance
Re: Hello from soon to be puppy parent Hello from me and Molly. Re transport - lots of people will have good suggestions, just don't do what I did which was went alone and put pup on old towel in foot-well of front passenger seat. I had brought my last dog home like this & he was as good as gold, slept all the way, but Molly screamed blue murder, tried to escape & was sick twice!
Re: Hello from soon to be puppy parent Hello and welcome! We used a large cardboard box lined with blankets and strapped it in the back seat with the seatbelt. Only had about 10 miles to drive though
Re: Hello from soon to be puppy parent Hi Mandy - welcome to the forum! Good luck with bringing Rio home. My daughter sat quite happily with Lilly on her knee, couple of polythene bags underneath (just in case) Only had a 30 minute or so trip. I think if it was a longer one, I would go for a cardboard box if needed. Jac and Lilly (4 year old girl)
Re: Hello from soon to be puppy parent Hi there, We used an old recycling crate with a pre-arranged smelly towel (take an old towel to the breeder before you collect Rio and ask for it to be put in with the mother and all of the litter - then collect the towel when you collect Rio and it will have absorbed the scent of mum and the littermates and will have a calming influence on the little chap). The crate was secured on the backseat with a seatbelt and OH sat next to it to keep an eye on Harvey. We had a nightmare car journey - an accident turned an hours journey into nearly three - but Harvey slept all the way
Re: Hello from soon to be puppy parent Welcome from me and Pongo (7 months now). We had a 2 and a half hour journey from the breeders. We had Pongo in a box in the passenger footwell, I sat in passenger seat and I had a towel and fleece so could bring him up on my knee every now and then. We put LOTS of newspaper in the box, and took LOTS of spare. That was a good idea, because the poor boy had several accidents (and was car sick too) so we stopped a couple of times to change the newspaper so he didn't have to be in a dirty box. He didn't enjoy the journey, but as soon as it was over he was completely fine....so for us it was a matter of "lets just get him home as fast as possible and get the journey over with....". He loves the car now! Have fun with your lovely pup. Tell us all about it. Rosie
Re: Hello from soon to be puppy parent Hello and a warm welcome from me and mine too, exciting times ahead
Re: Hello from soon to be puppy parent from a teeny tiny black 5 1/2 year old Lab known as The DivaDog and her pet human
Re: Hello from soon to be puppy parent Welcome to the forum! I think we were really lucky as we only had a 20 minute drive back from the breeders (half an hour maximum). I just had Penny in a blanket on my lap and she just went to sleep the whole way. I miss those days when she was so small she could curl up on my lap.... She still tries it now though...
Re: Hello from soon to be puppy parent Hi welcome from me and meg, yellow lab 14. We only had a few miles to travel when we first got megs but she still managed to be sick. I sat in the back with her and even now she hates the car. Didn't matter how many short journeys we did to nice doggy places, she's never got used to the car.
Re: Hello from soon to be puppy parent Hi there Mandy. Welcome from me and my yellow boy Dexter,he is nearly 2. We live in the Middle East and had to fly Dexter over to us from Scotland so his delivery was slightly different to the norm ;D I'm in the UK at the moment and missing him like may.net you can't wait to get your boy x
Re: Hello from soon to be puppy parent Hello, and welcome from Holly and me. Holly is a yellow Lab and is 21 months old today It only seems like yesterday when be brought her home. My wife sat in the back of the car with Holly on a couple of towels, and an old shower curtain underneath in case of accidents. We also had an emergency lead, lots of kitchen roll, a rubbish bag, some food, a water bowl and lots of water. Ready for anything! We rubbed one of the towels all over Holly's dam so it smelled of her. We'd been told that this helped to reduce separation worries for the few days until the smell wears off. We didn't have a squeak out of her (Holly, that is!).
Re: Hello from soon to be puppy parent Welcome to the forum, you must be feeling excited! I had about a 5 plus hours drive and Chepi stayed in her crate the whole time. It was fine. She had a big play before we started out and she slept most of the way. I worried about the temperature in the boot but luckily the sun was on the front of the car all the way. Air conditioning doesn't reach the boot unless your car has vents in the rear of the car. You can be cool in the front but the back could get hot at the same time. So, that is something to consider especially in the summer. I hope it all goes well on the day!
