We are out of options with our 8 month old yellow lab. She will not eat her own just our other lab’s poo. We have tried the recommended treats and even the Forbid. We did it for a week and still noticed she was eating it. Not sure if we needed to do it longer to see results. Anyways we are so disgusted by it and feel bad for her because we don’t want her near us. Just really want to know if anyone has any suggestions on what to do- We are desperate!!!!!

    Hi @Mel071238

    It's not rare.

Prevention is the easiest training plan. Other dog poos and dispose of it immediately. Should over time result in extinction of the behaviour.

What are you feeding the dogs? Expensive kibble or .....?

    What is Forbid?

I agree very disgusting habit. Our Shih Tzu will sometimes do it. The only sure way to prevent it is pickup poop immediately.

Hi, Im at my wits end with my 6 month old lab puppy - she will eat her own poo, her sisters (3 year old lab) and looks for poo when we out at park! I nearly always manage to pick it up first but when at park in long grass she finds it? Don't know if she will grow out of it. She is on James well beloved kibble and has chicken and scrambled egg so shouldn't be hungry.

I am not familiar with that brand. Is that a very expensive dog food? Are the stools large and lots of them?

So we feed our dogs Canade. Forbid is this powder you sprinkle in their food that’s suppose to make the dog’s poo taste awful. I try so hard to get the poo in time, but when she wants to go out at 2:30 in the morning it’s hard for me to go out with them because we have over an acre. I’ve had labs all my life and this is the first time I’m having this problem. So disgusting!

My lab used to do this and, like you, I found it disgusting. She ate her own, other dogs’ and the poo of every animal she could find, even human poo once.

She was on a good kibble. I don’t think it’s related to hunger.

She grew out of it, I can’t remember at what age. Now I can call her away from poo if she shows an interest but she rarely does. Every now and then she’ll eat some rabbit poo or horse poo if she comes across it but again, it’s rare and she’s easily distracted which she never was as a pup.

I was just about to add my own desperate plea for help when I came across yours! I have a 5 month old chocolate lab who is doing exactly the same! She eats her own or any other on a walk! It turns my stomach! I do remember our other two labs doing it when they were pups but they soon grew out of it. This seems to be lasting a bit longer! We've tried Tobasco sauce (put it on the poop before she gets to it, they won't like it!!) but she she goes back. It's also upsetting her stomach. I'm holding off taking her to the vets as it's not surprising when she's eating what she's eating, but it is spoiling our pup experience :(
