The new tenants at the farm where I go to walk the girls have just got some lovely free-range hens. How do I know this? Because Lochan dived through the hedge and brought me one as we got back to the car this morning......

Lochan has a very soft mouth and the hen survived the experience completely unharmed. I discreetly stuffed it back through the hedge....just hope it isn't going to be a recurring theme, although I reckon the local foxes will stop it being a problem pretty soon

Oopsie. Glad the hen survived the experience.

Free ranging is lovely.....until the local fox comes by, as you say... Fencing definitely a good idea!

I've got some friends whose chickens were killed by their neighbour's dog and in 'compensation' the neighbours bought them some ready-to-roast chickens from the supermarket. Since the birds were actually pets the gift didn't go over too well....

Brilliant Lochan. Although the way I feel about hens I wouldn't have minded if you'd had a snack. ;)

Let's just say me and hens don't get on. ;) not that I would wish them harm but ......

If somebody swapped ours for ready to roast I'd be quite happy. ;D

    Oh Lochan!! ;D Hope this doesn't become a habit…

Must say on our one and only shoot so far, when Pops dispatched and brought back a pheasant runner, I did think 'no chicken will ever be safe after this'…

How do farmers train their gun dogs not to chase and eat their chickens?

No hen incidents this morning I'm glad to say. Lochan gave the hedge a very calculating look before being rapidly called to heel....
