Hi there, lovely to meet you all Found my way here when I was looking for tips and advice on training my year old Harrier Charlie. I hope to find alot of useful advice and new ideas to challenge his mind
Hi and welcome from my furry family! I've never met a Harrier before, please tell us more about your boy - and share as many pictures as you're able. We love pictures here! You need to use a photo sharing website like Flickr, Imgur etc and then paste the BBCode in here (which looks like [ IMG]blahblahblah.com/image.jpg[/IMG]) Have a look around and feel free to ask whatever questions you may have - we're a friendly lot here and don't bite
Thank you for the welcome ^^ basically he's not much different from a really big Beagle which is what he was supposed to be, but there was a bit of communication error between breeder and lady i got him from who couldn't handle his energy level. You really don't see many as pets, in Ireland they are still used as hunting dogs, Charlie just didn't fit the bill too shy of loud noises and was picked on as a pup by his kennel mates. he's alot calmer than a beagle and smart but stubborn as a donkey so I struggle with training at times. he used to be not very treat orrinted but he was getting alot of tidbits through the day after i stopped and moved him onto a raw diet he has come on leaps and bounds and much more willing to learn and take treats. Goose and turkey are perfect for him. you might get sick of all my pictures, I have so many off him lol but I have included a few for you to see he isn't as short as he appears hes about 22 inches at the shoulder though he is on a diet lol
He does look very much like a Beagle. Very handsome, and 22 inches is taller than my two Labs Are you based in Ireland? What type of hunting are Harriers used for generally?
he just kept growing, and still is lol i hope he stops soon. Northern ireland but he came from Ireland down near the very bottom near tipperary ...think I spelt that wrong ooops. Usually hare's in marsh land so he has little webbed toes for that. each kennel has a different look to their harrier's depending what they are bred to hunt or the terrain so sometimes they are crossed awaaaaay back in the lines with beagles and fox hounds etc to get the desired look.
Yeah, just googled them. Very interesting. My dog walker has a Beagle, and because she has actually managed to train a decent recall, even with scent around, now has a pack of Beagles with people wanting her to walk and help train them! Have you ever tried things like tracking etc? Bet dogs like Harriers are amazing at that kind of thing.
im working on my boy's recall at the minute, sorta did the usual shouting and wearing out the here and get back etc so doing it back to square one with a long line and a whistle much better results. if i can get him to stop pulling I'll be a happy bunny he does some nose games in the house but havnt tried anything outside, he'd rather run so hoping to get him into bikejoring or canicross at some point but also interested in agility but no where close by does agilty or flyball or anything to join
Ah yes, I've seen that with the Beagles! Yeesh. And we think it's hard getting a Lab to walk on a loose lead!
Hello and welcome from me and Lilly! Just a conventional black lab girl who is 5 and a half. Our neighbors had a couple of beagles - I think stubborn as a donkey fits, as well as agile and able to empty the contents of a bread bin/tray of scones/dishwasher in the blink of an eye. Lovely to meet other breeds on here, hope you enjoy the forum, jac
thank you for the welcome, and honestly I wanted a lab but parents wanted a small dog so beagle suited...turns out he's alot bigger oops. stubborn and can clear food up within seconds, not the most agile at times though i think he puts it on, he can clear the wall at our front garden but when i want him to step over a pole suddenly he's scared of feet leaving the ground.
he does great in the house, but after that no go its full steam ahead and nothing will change his mind on that, i stood for 25 minutes once trying to get him to turn back and he decided the patch of grass was of great interest to eat -_-
yup lol he shouldn't grow to much bigger, supposed to be lab sized but try telling him that...just gotta work on th pudgy belly lol he's kinda chubby a whole 28kg chubby ooops
Hi and welcome from Hattie 8 years and our rescue boy Charlie 5 years. What a lovely boy Charlie is. Enjoy the forum! Helen xx
Just popping by to say hi to you and Charlie, thanks for telling us a bit about him and his breed....I am good friends with a beagle...she is lovely and does have a degree of recall but we 'lose" ( nose down, deaf ears, distance covered! her at least once on every walk....she never goes off lead if I am walking her myself without her owner. We have Dexter ,a yellow working line boy who is now a little over 3 years old Best Wishes Angela x
thankfully he isn't into sniffing as much as a Beagle so I can let him off away from roads and he does brilliantly, only issue is when there are other dogs and he wants to play, curing him of that bad habit is proving difficult. thank you for the welcome ^^
