Hello everyone I'm introducing myself and my golden lab holly Also some advice on chewing! She has bylabone toys and a kong along with a few other softer chew toys but she still prefers chewing me or the sofa! Anything else I can buy that she might me more interested in chewing!?
Re: Holly 9 week wanting advice How gorgeous! Welcome from me and Charlie (10 week old Chocolate lab). We have found kongs goods too. Inner tubes off cling film/kitchen foil and a bunch of toys more exiting than my stair carpet that are bought out as a distraction. Prevention is best. Have found and moved everything we can up high and come to terms with the fact our table and chair legs will never be the same again!
Re: Holly 9 week wanting advice Like Emma, there were some things that we just moved. The rug in the lounge was fine. The runner in the hall with the tassels at the ends is hidden in the cupboard... Our pup is 13 weeks now and has loved rope toys - Sainsbury's have a rope range of dog toys, there's a lion, an elephant - and a pink octopus that I'm really tempted to go back for! When she fancied a good old chew I offered her one of those instead of me and she has loved them - manufacturer irrelevant, it was just a toy with a great texture and thinner bits of fluffy rope at points for a bit of tactile variety! I haven't let her have any cardboard tubes - but that's just me, because I think it's too hard for them to distinguish between the cardboard they are allowed and the cardboard they're not. She has loved the rawhide chews too, especially if I hold them for her! Clare
Re: Holly 9 week wanting advice Hi she is a gorgeous pup.... and I'm so glad i'm not the only one with hands that are a mess LOL. Layla is 14 weeks old now and the biting of my hands, ankles (and anything else she can get to) is lessening. I've found a firm no and offering her something else to chew on is working (most of the time). I have given her an antler which has occupied her chewing drive for the last 2 days (fingers crossed) and Smearing it with a little Bovril keeps her interest. Good luck !!!
Re: Holly 9 week wanting advice Welcome to you both. What a cute puppy Every time Harley tried to chew myself, my hubby or furniture, I would say no then offer her something more suitable. She had an antler which has worked wonders and she still chews it now. Also, any toys with rope are always useful here. If she bit hard I would yelp, then stand up, turn my back and ignore her for a few seconds then would go back and play. This was a tip I read on this forum and it worked brilliantly Harley (now 15 weeks old) stopped biting us and chewing furniture within about 1-2 weeks of us doing this. It does pay off if you are consistent. Good luck
Re: Holly 9 week wanting advice Hi everyone! I'm so glad I'm not the only one with chew toys instead of hands! I guess I'll have to just keep telling her no on the sofa front! Was considering the spray but reluctant incase it doesn't work it's not exactly cheap. I think my mum has bought her a rope toy with a ball on I'll have to get her to bring it round n try that because she seems bored with the ones I've got her already!
Re: Holly 9 week wanting advice Hi Drina, what a beautiful puppy and welcome to the forum. You've probably seen this article but I'll put up the link just in case Biting
Re: Holly 9 week wanting advice Our yellow lab, also called holly, was a chewer when we first got her. For the first few weeks we kept her in the kitchen, so we moved the good table and chairs out. We replaced it with Two cheap stools and a table from the charity shop. Once she'd lost interest in chewing them we progressively gave her access to the rest of the furniture.
Re: Holly 9 week wanting advice Hi Drina - welcome to you and Holly - gorgeous pup. I recommend long sleeves for going out ;D Will definitely grow out of it - lots of others feel your pain with this too. Jac and Lilly 3&1/2 black girl
Re: Holly 9 week wanting advice What a cutie! I cant believe how big they get so quickly though! We had lots of problems with our choc pup and his love of chewing, thankfully we now seem to have it to down to an art I find that ice cubes work an absolute treat if you put a little low fat doggy treat inside when making them..or make up some gravy/stock and make the ice cubes with this. Ollie has lots of fun throwing it around and seems to love biting them when his gums are sore. Also things like plastic drinks bottles and putting a treat inside helps keep him entertained and chewing the right thing, aswell as the cardboard inside the finished toilet rolls or kitchen rolls (be prepared for your house to look a little bit of a dump for a few hours tho lol) The vet also recommended to us putting a low fat pate or something tasty like that on the kong toy..so long as you dont give too much. This may not be for everyone and some may disagree with me but all of these things made a HUGE difference with our puppy and his biting When he bit us, we would yelp and stand up to let him know he had hurt us and then corrected him by giving him the right thing to chew on. Slowly, slowly..we are getting there! Its just a case of showing him these other things are way more fun and rewarding to chew on Good luck
Re: Holly 9 week wanting advice Thank you all for the replies. Holly is now 10 weeks and is getting big already! The biting is soo much better she no longer bites hard still biting obviously but she makes an effort not to do it hard and will end up licking after a few no's! We've had a full course of injections and are eagerly awaiting and practising going out to walk in the lead in 2 weeks
Re: Holly 9 week wanting advice She is beautiful!! Welcome from Lisa and Simba, 15 month choc labX Glad to hear you're making progress with the biting!!
