Hi HELP! My 12 week old puppy and 14 month old cat can't seem to spend more than 2 minutes in the same room together without my puppy chasing the cat the minute he tries to walk away. My cat is extremely friendly and sensible and hasn't hissed or swiped at the puppy once. The puppy just wags her tail and wants to play but the minute the cat moves the chase begins and the cat ends up outside for hours on end. Does anyone have any tips for helping them to co-exist? Thanks
Welcome to you. I have no tips, we failed with my friend's cat (where Tatze spends her holidays) so my friend has baby gates and dog-free areas. Tatze continues to want to chase him, but - quite often these days - the cat now just stands and looks at her. You can't chase a cat that doesn't run!
There is no way your cat and puppy are going to coexist if the pup is allowed to chase the cat! If the pup chases the cat you're going to have to keep him on a lead to prevent the chase, use stair gates to enable the cat to be in a puppy free zone but still in the house. Put the cat's food in an area that the puppy doesn't have access to. Although we often have this 'ideal' picture of our cat snuggled up to the dog and them sleeping together which can occur, but in reality many pretty much ignore each other or tolerate the others presence in a room. I had 2 cats when I introduced yhe kast pup into the household and they were not impressed but with puppy management, stair gates etc they all live together without any hissing, spitting or smacking. They may not curl up together but they are at ease living together which is good enough for me
