Tiger is now 5 months and knows how to sit, stay (just getting the hang of it), down, roll over, but he does not know how to STOP jumping when people are around and especially children. He has gotten LESS jumpy since I've taken him out to parks (he goes out twice a day and gets play time in the house) but his jumping DOES startle people but mostly kids. A 10 year old asked to pet him and let him know that he DOES jump and he was with his father. He let me know that they have a year old dog at home to offer reassurance, well even they were surprised at Tiger's jumping. " Whoa boy, calm down". I saw judgemental faces of walkers/joggers passing by almost as if to say that I don't have control over my puppy. Sometimes I get the "uh-ohs" from a few older women as if to say the same thing. Yes, I restrain tiger, tug him to me, firmly tell him to stay but he DOES get distracted as most puppies do, but preventing him from jumping all together sounds near impossible...is it? If so, HOW can I stop this behavior in a positive way?
Re: How do I stop my puppy from jumping? I think you have to have a bit of a zero tolerance to jumping up ever. I've worked very hard at this, and I've got to the stage where I still have some jump ups but mostly they are very gentle and he does it slowly and barely rests his paws on people. Sometime he jumps up but doesn't put his paws on people at all (he look like a meerkat! ). But it's been slow and hard work. I started at home with this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lC_OKgQFgzw Here is a description I wrote of my efforts a while back:
I have not solved it, but now he does very gentle slow jump ups, hardly putting his paws on people as if to say "I'm not really jumping up, look, barely touching you" and he just does it once or twice and generally responds when I tell him sit instead. I had to improve matters (Charlie was due for surgery on his back leg). So at first, no-one approach Charlie without instructions. No-one at all. I had Charlie on a lead at the back of the kitchen, my clicker and treats. Person came into view. If Charlie's feet stayed still, C&T. If not, person stepped back out of view. Then one step towards Charlie, C&T or step back. Worked up to person standing beside Charlie pretending to have a conversation with me. And Charlie's feet had stayed still. Etc etc and repeat - with dog walker, dad, SIL, brother, cleaner, friend, postman.... And repeat again, in a different room. And repeat again, with no lead but Charlie behind a barrier. And repeat again, in the vet's waiting room... The other thing that has helped, is just a flat preventing him from jumping up - but appreciate the lengths you have to go to do this are a bit extreme. Now (post surgery) have him with a collar and on a lead, or trailing a lead handle, at all times, and he is simply never allowed to jump up. Although I thought this wouldn't help (as it's not his choice not to jump up), it has helped - when people were in a full height kennel with him yesterday, he didn't try to jump up at all.
Last night, I found myself sketching out an invention of a magnetic floor, a magnet round the dog's collar, and an electronic trigger that would activate when the dog jumped to pull his collar downwards back to the floor! : This is because one of our strategies was to have someone lying on the floor pulling his collar handle downwards when he tried to jump!!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D Quite frankly, I don't care about jumping up that much, but have been forced to deal with it. Now, counter surfing... don't get me started! :
Re: How do I stop my puppy from jumping? Jumping up and counter surfing the 2 major bug bears of my life. So please, get started Julie. I am always willing to learn.
Re: How do I stop my puppy from jumping? Counter surfing... : : : Post surgery, unless I can stop Charlie counter surfing, he has to be in his pen. He counter surfs badly in the kitchen. It's not really food he is after (although if he got any, that would be a jackpot of course). It's anything. The things I used to forget the most are the knob for the hob (it's magnetic, so he can pull it off) and the sponge (I have a double sink, and if I leave the sponge on the ledge between the two sinks, he can reach it). If only this dog would learn other things as quick as I'm likely to have forgotten to put the hob knob and the sponge away. : So, step one, Charlie is in the kitchen, with the counters cleared of everything. I mean, everything. I'm on the floor, he is on a lead or lead handle. There is a barrier to make the space small enough. He is predictable. I can tell when he is about to jump (but this has taken a lot of observation, he sniffs the air then aligns himself straight to the counter) if he decides to jump, but responds to "no" or "sit" instead, C&T. If he decides to counter surf, I put my hand on the lead. Because I'm on the floor, the pressure is underneath his collar this just prevents his feet from leaving the ground more than about an inch. Much easier than stopping a dog from jumping while standing, because you have to push him back down. Step two, he approaches the points at which he would normally counter surf (below the kibble bin, below the sink, below the bread bin, below the hob) but doesn't counter surf, C&T. Step three is to reintroduce the sponge or hob knob and repeat. But I haven't got there yet. Then I'll try standing up. I am quite mad. I know. It just wouldn't be worth it under normal circumstances. I'd be happy to stock up on sponges and buy spare hob knobs.
Re: How do I stop my puppy from jumping? Quite, quite mad.....but quite, quite successful too so it's all worth it
Re: How do I stop my puppy from jumping? I was just in the kitchen now, writing a list leaning on one of Charlie's hot counter surfing spots, keeping an eye out left and right in case he decided to jump up. He jumped up - put his paws gently on my bum and just stood there, wagging his tail. Of course I had to make him get down right away. But this dog! : : : If I didn't know better, I'd say he was laughing!
Re: How do I stop my puppy from jumping? I was thinking that sponge and Hob Nobs were just a bit of a temptation - the boy has good taste ;D
Re: How do I stop my puppy from jumping? Tatze still does a bit of jumping up if strangers use excited voices. I make sure I control her meetings with people and stand on the lead to keep her paws on the ground. As soon as I see someone walking up I pop her lead on and we either walk past or, if the person wants to say hello, I stand on the lead. If they have a dog I don't need to do any of that - she likes dogs far better than people and just wants to play
Re: How do I stop my puppy from jumping? I was more hoping for "well you just wave this magic wand" kind of solution. Hoping for, but not expecting. Training them NOT to do things is so much harder than training them to do something. You have a sense of achievement when they achieve a nice sit, but when they stop doing something that really drives you up the wall you don't immediately notice. Molly has a real penchant for wash up pads I guess they contain a mixture of every food you have had in the house (mostly stale). Oh well. Back to the training
Yes, yes, yes! See Jen's BAT (Behaviour Adjustment Training) thread. Your best chance lies in changing the response that the stimulus generates. I'm talking like I know what I'm saying here- I really don't- it's taken me 8 months to realise that my pup is not going to 'get' the fact that the cats don't want to play in the morning, and any amount of bouncing will only result in hissing and scratching (not good for the nerves at 6am). Suddenly I realise I need a replacement behaviour - command 'out you go' for 'go and lie down just outside the kitchen, and every so often a couple of bits of kibble will come your way'. Bingo!
Re: How do I stop my puppy from jumping? Good for you For many people this really is a Eureka moment. Accepting that training 'in' great behaviours is nearly always a better approach than training 'out' the bad ones.
Re: How do I stop my puppy from jumping? VERY slowly but surely Lola is getting the hint about jumping. She come speeding in from the garden and throw herself at my legs which I nudge her down and ignore her but if she comes in and stands or sits in front of me she'll get a good fuss or a yummy! Just need her to stop jumping at our son. She knocks him over to lick him to death!!! Love the magnetic floor keep Lola and Stephen still

If I keep Charlie "under orders" ie sit on mat, down and stay, etc. that's fine. One day, I'd just like a dog that chills in the kitchen without me having to have my counters as clean as an operating theatre, or me constantly telling him to "do" something....maybe one day...?

It's a bit like longing for a walk which doesn't require 360 degree vigilance 100% of the time ;D ;D I bet I'll miss the craziness when it's gone though- then I'll know it's time for another pup!

But, Charlie shows no sign whatsoever of growing up, at least! ;D
Re: How do I stop my puppy from jumping? Julie ,your Charlie will always have a puppy glint in his eye and a counter surf up his paw!Hes got a few pranks in his mind for you before he will accept he's all grown up,he's saving them up until he all better and you'll find them ;D not xxx
