Sorry that you have encountered this problem....

I think that eating the poo of other species is pretty normal, although I totally want to barf when Obi eats cat poo and we do try to prevent it (by putting him on lead in known cat poo zones). Eating dog poo is also normal, even if it is doubly disgusting....

Can only agree with the advice in that article.... Strive for a good recall or Magic Word.

    And a strong stomach.

Thanks very much. Having read the article it seems it's mostly kibble eaters; I wonder if any raw meat eaters out there do it. The article is helpful and there's no mention of muzzling or using those collars that give a puff of smelly stuff, as suggested by some dog walkers I have met. (Which I didn't like the sound of)

I guess I would prefer the muzzle idea rather than the smelly spray, but the other option such s a "leave it" or recall command is better, I think. But it's a tough one, Simba has a pretty good leave it, but if he's of this nose on something the likelihood he will listen goes down and if he actually has it in his mouth obedience goes down quite considerably.

Good luck with this, let us know how you get on!

Rolo is a poop eater. Only his own tho. Does Chepi eat her own poop? There is a product you add to their food that becomes active in the stomach and makes the poop taste very hot (i think it's chilli that's added) the vet recommended we buy some for Rolo. Pet's at home sell it.

i have read pippas article that says it is more likely that dogs fed on kibble will eat there own and other dogs poo if they are fed on kibble but while milly is fed on kibble she does not eat her own only when we are out with my friends dogs who are raw fed she eats that

Oh, it makes you cringe, doesn't it? Merla went through a phase of it, but seems to not have so much of a problem now - I agree that a pocket full of stuff that tastes better than poo seems to be the only answer.

By the way, I had a bit of a 'teacher moment' chuckle at your sentence construction in the post heading. I mean, in the context of the forum it's obvious who's eating the poo, but .......

He he, made me giggle too!!

Maisie will eat all sorts of poo, except dog poo, and the only thing that works is a "leave it" if I spot her in time! Thankfully she doesn't eat her own.

Lilly still likes some poo....pheasant and fox of course.....but she grew out of the tendency to snaffle everything on ber travels by a out 18months I think.
    There is some hope....

Thanks everyone. I read the article, chose bits of apple as a treat and unimaginatively chose "apple" as my magic word; we put it to the test this morning and had a positive start.
Metal, I am an English teacher and didn't notice! ;D

Hi- I feed raw and Molly does still have a tendency to eat poo. She used to be a lot worse but she has recently improved. This could be down to a number of factors- I did switch from kibble to raw food, she has also left puppy hood plus I've relaxed a bit over the whole thing so I think it's become less of an obsession for both of us. I couldn't really say whether switching to raw feeding was a decisive factor in the change in her behaviour though. Plus, as other people have said if she's far enough away from me and gets the scent of something then selective deafness to the 'leave it' command does have a tendency to take over! I try not to get to het up about it.

Gypsy came to us as a poo eater (10 weeks) apparently they copy Mum as she clears up this way.

I was advised to lure her away with treats then pick it up out of her sight (or she would see it as 'valuable' if she saw me picking it up). It worked - she comes away for her treat every time.

This was easier for us as she doesn't poo or wee out and about, Guide Dogs are trained to only toilet at home, in the spending area, or on command. Of course, working dogs can't be toileting on the job. [no I didn't think this was possible to train - but it is! - she comes home and goes straight out to the loo!]

Reached a new low on poo eating: just learned she does it frequently at doggy day care. So I feel I am fighting a losing battle.

    Oh, that is tricky...

I guess your options are to give a raw diet a go (although it's no guarantee) or just chalk it up as one of those throughly disgusting but not life threatening things that dogs do. She may well just stop of her own accord in time...

I do feel for you.....it is gross to watch.

It reminds me of when I got my first dog and he was a puppy and we were out playing on a local sporting field. A little girl spotted us from a fair way away and came running over to breathlessly announce that they had a Labrador puppy too and that yesterday her brother, caught short in the great outdoors (not her words), had had to do a poo behind a tree and puppy had eaten it straight up! She was most in awe of what had happened. It was rather hilarious and kind of sick-making at the same time.

I'm not too fussed if the pups have a nibble on cow poo, but ...

A couple of weeks ago, we were out and about with the pups and Willow was getting restless, so I took her out for a wee to a bit of rough scrubland behind the buildings. It was pitch black and I noticed she had something in her mouth. I knew it couldn't be anything good from there, so I stuck my fingers in and scooped it out. It was soft. I am ashamed to admit, I sniffed my fingers. It was poo. Human poo.

Needless to say, I walked straight back inside, gave DH the lead without a word, walked straight into the bathroom and scrubbed my hands for about ten minutes.

I'm going to have nightmares about that one.

I'm terribly sorry, but that is freakin' hilarious ;D

Hope the therapy is not too expensive ;)
