Re: How to reduce heat in body Is the dog too hot because of the weather? Or because you think she might be ill?
Re: How to reduce heat in body Labradors often like to lie in water - a lot of people get a plastic children's paddling pool for them. Or you can just wet the dog, especially under the stomach or anywhere the fur is thinner
Re: How to reduce heat in body Hi Lokesh I live in an extremely hot climate in Dubai ,you have to really think about your dogs welfare and my vet told me that the humidity is actually the biggest danger to your dog overheating. You need to avoid your dog being outside during the hottest time of the day ,it is very bad for them . I walk Dexter really early,it is still dark when I set out at 5 am,he is 2 now so he gets a really big walk of about 2 hours .This is because the rest of the day is too hot until 4 pm so he will remain indoors except for very quick toilet breaks. Its really important to limit their time outside during the hot parts of the day. On my walk I take 3 liters of water and we stop regularly for drinks.never give your dog iced water to drink though,it can cause bloat which is very dangerous.Dexters evening walk is usually another hour in the cooler months but now he gets 30 mins max......sometimes I even turn back after 15 mins if I think he's got too warm to quickly .i hose him down with water before we go out in the evening, although that doesn't have the same effect now we are so humid. We have a paddling pool in the garden that he plays in....we give him ice cubes to chase in the garden during the times he is allowed to be out.He has a bed that is up off the floor for when he is outside .....this allows air to circulate around him and keep him cool.they love water play, even of you just sprinkle your dog with a hose it will cool them down. I appreciate that we all live in different parts of the world and some Items aren't available to buy it there are special cooling jackets that you can buy for your dog, these are meant to assist in moderate temperatures though ....not to be relied on to keep your dog cool in extreme temps for long periods. I've also found that I've had to plan activities and time fillers for Dexter ,to keep him out of mischief and prevent boredom ......we rotate his toys,I've reduced his bowl meals and he has some of his meal allowances in frozen kongs and we do several training sessions and games throughout the day. I hope this has helped a little bit, sorry if my reply seems long x
Re: How to reduce heat in body You mentioned in an earlier post that you kept your dog outside at night, is he also kept outside in the day? If so, do make sure he has shade which is there all the time. Iced water I believe can cause 'shock' to the inside. Always make sure there is water to drink 24 hours a day. In the UK you can buy 'cool coats' which you put on the dog, maybe you can buy them in your country? Or you can buy something called "Easidri" (Google it) which is primarily used to dry a dog, but I have also read that it you soak it in water, then wring it out, the dog can lie on it and that is very cooling.
Re: How to reduce heat in body Cool water is good and your dog should have it whenever he wants. You can pour cool water on your dog as well. Some people think that ice cold water is bad. It might cause a stomach problem.
Re: How to reduce heat in body We often suggest freezing Kongs. And giving dogs ice cubes to play with. I don't know that there is ANY evidence that ice water and ice cubes will cause bloat. My understanding is that bloat is most likely to happen if you feed your dog before, or too soon after, exercise. Please correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think water is the issue. In humans, the advice is to give ice/cold drinks to bring down a temperature - and this is thought probably more effective than giving medicine like paracetamol and ibuprofen too - but that "tepid sponging" in some cases can be actively dangerous. It is much better to cool down "from the inside out" - hence the cool drinks. I would be really surprised if iced water was harmful in any way. And in dogs, cooling mats/wet towels seem to be quite widely used and seem safe.
Re: How to reduce heat in body I don't think iced water could cause bloat, but have read that it can be a 'shock' to the system. Iced Kongs are different as the dog does not swallow a whole lot of iced water, but licks the kong and it is slowly swallowed. I have given mine ice cold water, but don't anymore.

[/quote] Totally throwing my hands up as the guilty party for the ice water scare : I'm sorry if I've wrongly informed :-[ I read the original Facebook story ( which I can't find) and took it as face value.....probably thinking a little bit about how I would feel if I'd just done a run and gulped down a load of ice water too ....... Searching round trying to find the original post ,which I can't,I've found this which answers some of the issues raised in the original article and quotes some of it in the bold type .... http://wendtworthcorgis.wordpress.com/2010/07/31/no-ice-water-for-dogs-please-read-asap/ And this from a vet http://wgntv.com/2014/06/19/vet-fires-back-over-no-ice-water-for-dogs-facebook-post/ Sorry guys x
Re: How to reduce heat in body No need to apologise as my information had nothing to do with the Facebook Scare! In fact I hadn't heard of it! I am sure it is something I read some time ago.
Re: How to reduce heat in body Do you know?.......I think its one of those things that folk will disagree on until the end of time anyway. :-\ Everything in moderation?
