not sure how i will explain everything,.....any questions ask and i will try to answer them, pheeew been to see the surgeon , at northwest surgeons, cheshire orthopaedic surgery,...take a look at there web site, saw dr chris may, managing director , fantastic guy , he made us feel very relaxed, let jasper off the lead in the room and told us to let him do his own thing,he was a little giddy as you would expect .....he then spoke with us for approx 30 mins asking questions and explaining displasia, he then asked me to walk jasper out side, walking him up and down slowly, told him to sit , then walk slowly again on the lead.....was very proud i had been doing my lead training as he walked brilliant, back inside where he explained the scan results,....he said i will tell you my 3 phrases, if it was my dog,NO i would not operate, if it was my wifes dog NO i would not operate, if it was wayne rooneys dog NO i would not operate, .....he asked was i using him as a working dog,he said if i was he would be sucking his teeth in at this stage, also said if he was to be a guide dog he would have not made the grade,he said they score guide dogs normally at a 9 to 10, at this stage jasper would score a 7........he said his condition was top form , his coat, weight ect even his good looks said to maintain the weight, so was happy with that to continue with leads walks adding extra couple of mins on each night,.....after adding on an extra 15 mins over the next 2 weeks, let him off the lead for 5 mins every other night, do this until he is up to his 40 min walk,......ring him at any time and he will always answer my calls,.....the operation is only 60/40 successful, he is not ruling out an operation in the future, at this moment in time jasper would not benefit the operation ....advised to take him off the anti inflammatory ,......to be in touch with him after 4 weeks to see if he is progressing, ......i feel happy he is not having operation at this time,i am going to enjoy him and give him the best life possible i guess it as brought a bigger bond with each other thank you all for your messages
Re: how will i explain all this Oh Lynne ,bet your head was spinning....this sounds like a very considered approach and with a follow up in 4 weeks there is a good plan in place to keep a check on him.Although I know sometimes it is very necessary,it's a big deal to put them through an operation.......I bet he could tell you are a conscientious owner too who will monitor him carefully and increase his exercise as explained.Im really happy for you and Jasper....and your son too of course,we know he's been gutted!moving forward now,Jasper is a very lucky dog to live with you x
Re: how will i explain all this forgot to add angela, he said you are a very observant person to have noticed this problem, i told him i kept asking others could they see a limp and every one was telling me no.....he said well you didn't imagine it the problem is there,...he asked how would i describe he walked, my reply he walks like a penguin, his reply i say charlie chaplin or 10 to 2.......my son is just taking him on is little walk ...thank you for including my son, just going to show him your reply
Re: how will i explain all this Thats really good news for you Lynne. I am pleased that the vet man felt he wasn't bad enough to operate. Sounds like the same situation we have with Lilly - just be sensible, and watch for any changes. Its really good to have someone approachable too if you are worried- he seems to be making himself very available, and of course you have your own lovely vet too.. Did you ask him about the hydrotherapy? I bet it will be good for Jasper. You must be relieved. * no cone of shame Jasper lad *
Re: how will i explain all this i did ask about the hydro therapy, he didn't rave on it, .....he said at this stage he don't need it as he is active enough...he did say he will get arthritis in years to come and may be look into it then,.......one other thing he mentioned them balls what you throw from a scoop said they was the worst things every invented, .....as you only need to stand and throw them no exercise involved , so the owner does not get tired of throwing yet the dog will be tired, .......was very pleased with the consultation, now i wish i would have been a vet,......cost of 199 pound i should be pleased, he did say but you can ring me any time hehehe
Re: how will i explain all this Good to hear the good news. It must be a relief for you. What a time you've had lately!
Re: how will i explain all this Sounds like a great guy!!! So glad that you have access to top medical care. I'm sorry that I have not been keeping up with this but what is the diagnosis exactly? I had thought that it was a bone chip in his elbow but it seems that it's either elbow or hip displaysia?
Re: how will i explain all this its elbow displaysia .....in medical terms, ....in human terms it would be a fractured bone ..i think ....my daughter was with me and took all in...i have had her explaining and explaining over and over ;D... there is so much to take in, and sorry i am dyslexic and get things all back to front,... ....my little guy is fine ,, was so happy with his behaviour today
Re: how will i explain all this Thanks very much for explaining, Lynne Great news that it doesn't seem to be very severe at all and that it can be managed without surgery. Really great that you are feeling happier about how it is all going.
Re: how will i explain all this Well that is a relief! Surgery is no fun, and if it's not necessary at the moment that's great!! And you're spared the cone!!!! So glad that worry is off your shoulders, Lynne! Now back to normal - and extra cuddles for your grandson!!
Re: how will i explain all this This is really positive Lynne , just think of the now and not what may ( or may not ) happen years and years down the line . So very pleased that Jasper doesnt need surgery and can slowly get back to normal now, bless him
