No Dexter isn't! This just popped up on my Facebook...... http://indefinitelywild.gizmodo.com/why-dogs-howl-1647222053 Reading it made me think I don't think I've ever heard a domestic dog howl,don't think I want to and Dexter certainly hasn't .....have any of you heard a dog do a spontaneous howl? There's some quite emotive subjects when you look at highlighted articles on this site....don't think il be delving too deeply :-\
Re: Howling..... my wee girl lab has occasionally howled in her sleep - does that count? She's done it about 3 times in 2 years so its not very often !!
Re: Howling..... Mollie (retriever cross collie) would howl like the devil if she became separated from us on a walk, just hide behind a tree would set her off. Was quite unnerving. Betty Chihuahua will howl if left alone, it's one of the main reasons we got Elsie and she settles nicely with her.

Cuillin occasionally howls if I go out with brodick and leave her home alone. normally she'll just bark a bit, but on occassion Ill be coming back and hear a proper slightly eerie broken up howl coming from the house, it doesnt sound like her! I was told its just her calling out to us, not sure why she doesn' t always do it if thats why....
Re: Howling..... Charlie whines and moans watching other dogs retrieve (we are getting better) but apart from that, is pretty much silent. Re: Howling..... Yes Lady did a blood curdler in her sleep once too. Made us both jump! She stayed sound asleep though.
Re: Howling..... Riley has his trademark goose honk but that's about it apart from a woof for the postie. Obi got some serious chat and barks whenever he feels left out, he's also got a baby Clumber woo-woo. I'm expecting that to develop considerably :

Both mine howl like that in the back of the car when we go on one particular walk and we get near the destination, I love to see and hear them do it, as a howling woof thrills me Though mine are not like a wolf, more excitement in meeting their friend; it is the howling in the quiet of the wild I find thrilling as one wolf communicates with another.

Seems like the Obi's amongst us definately have the gift of the gab ;D I can't imagine Dexter howling .....I can't even imagine how he'd look when he is doing it ....thanks for the replies x
Re: Howling..... Simba has a whole range of howls he will use when he is excited, mainly when he is in the house and we are coming back and he's chomping at the bit to greet us, and then there is the trademark "lament of the starving Labrador"....
