Am I doing wrong by not giving scout any. The only food other then her dog food and dog treats is veg when we are chopping: carrots, turnip, mushrooms. People are always saying we should give her our left overs: Sunday lunch, spag Bol, etc. I see pics of dogs enjoying ice creams and licking out yogourt pots. We never give her bones, fresh or the cleaned, boiled ones from the pet shop. Scout does have an antler cutting, which I reluctantly give her because I know she loves it. I'm worried about the foods that are poisonous like onions and too much salt. Does anybody here give their dogs left overs and stuff, am I being too harsh?
Re: Human food and tidbids.. We give leftovers, but there is definitely no need to and you are not being at all harsh if you choose not to
Re: Human food and tidbids.. I feed Poppy almost all our leftovers! Meat, veg, potatoes, egg, cheeseā¦ Obviously no sweet stuff or raisins and I avoid giving her onions. But you are definitely not being mean - it's up to each family what they feed their dog. I just hate waste!!!
Re: Human food and tidbids.. Yes Lady gets leftovers from time to time too. I find I need to keep track of quantity though, otherwise she can easily pile on weight. She loves raw carrot, apples, and broccoli which aren't fattening. Normally she's on a mainly kibble diet with some moist food mixed in in the evening meal, but last night she had pasta, peas and broccoli left over from the grandchildren's tea time suppers. She seemed to like it as after she'd licked out the bowl twice she flipped it over and licked the bottom to make sure. ;D I'm on my own this evening having pasta myself so the routine Lady and I have in these circumstances is she shares my pasta and some vegetables mixed in with some kibble in front of a film on the TV.
Re: Human food and tidbids.. Penny doesn't really get leftovers but she gets a bit of fruit or veg if I'm chopping it up. And the odd crisp...sandwich crust...end of a sausage...peice of chicken...gets to lick empty yoghurt pots...frozen peas... So not really leftovers but she does get bits of our food. My mum gives her dog leftovers - she gets a roast dinner after we've had ours, she gets bits of steak, all sorts!
Re: Human food and tidbids.. Leftovers from time to time here too, not so much for Hattie as a girl needs to watch her weight but Charlie can eat for Great Britain It just depends on what suits you Trisha but Scout will not know so don't worry x
Re: Human food and tidbids.. Holly gets the odd bit of our food. A bit of broccoli, a slice of carrot that "accidentally" falls off the bench, the occasional yoghurt pot that needs cleaning before it can be recycled. Like all things, it does no harm in moderation.
Re: Human food and tidbids.. I don't give Tatze human food - except cream cheese, peanut butter etc in her kong and small bits of sausage for treats - from the treat bag. I use tinned salmon as a mega jackpot when training. In other words, any human food NEVER comes off our plates, dishes, work surface or table - or out of our hands when eating biscuits etc. My reason is a friend's lab - she would sit and drool whenever my friend was eating. Good as gold, not asking in any way - just yukky drool everywhere! Tatze has no interest in our food as she knows she never gets any.
Re: Human food and tidbids.. Nothing at all for Charlie - he piles on weight if I don't watch it (my vet describes him as a super efficient car! Billions of lab energy units to the gram of food!). So food is just to valuable to not be quite strictly controlled. It's all used up in training, walk treats, kongs, games and so on. Even the small amount of veggies he can have are carefully hoarded for use in a kong for a car journey etc.
Re: Human food and tidbids.. Harley occasionally gets bit like veg when I'm chopping it up, but doesn't eat off our plates even when we are finished. We do give her one biscuit a night that hubby gives her, or a few plain nuts everyone is different and it's entirely up to what you choose.
Re: Human food and tidbids.. I'm with Magz on this one. Dexter doesn't get any leftovers but he does get human food. Still learning what dogs can and can't have. We'll feed him apples and some veg if we're chopping it up. He doesn't like potato but in true lab style, doesn't turn it down He just hides it in his bed :-[ His sister is a fan of Fab lolly ices! Dexter is like a sponge with food though, he just seems to absorb it all and piles weight on so we have to be careful.
Re: Human food and tidbids.. Ours also have leftovers , tonight they had Wednesday nights leftover spag bol , but if you do feed scraps, make sure you reduce their dog food , I just couldnt waste good food, meanie that I am
Re: Human food and tidbids.. E. dogs problem is that most things give her appalling wind. There are times when i only know she's sleeping under my desk because of the noxious smells wafting up. no bread, pasta, rubbish human food, no windy pops so i either feed it to her and accept nasally paying for it or i don't and live smell free.
Re: Human food and tidbids.. I think my two must have cast iron guts , we rarely have any smells , thank goodness
Re: Human food and tidbids.. I think sharing our food is something humans to family members. Very few scraps here (I'm a vege for a start). She NEVER gets food directly from me. I insist that it is put on a separate plate on the window sill. Hubby has been known to slip her bits of veg when he's preparing food. As for this sharing lark. Ever been offered kibble
Re: Human food and tidbids.. Rarely any leftovers in our house! Mira does get bits of raw veg but mostly the bits we don't eat, cauli stalks & outer leaves etc. Usually 2 apple cores per day, plus a couple of crusts from hubby's toast : - something he started when she was a few months old, against my better judgement! Very occasionally there is a yogurt pot to lick out. She never gets anything at the table. Crusts are put in her bowl for her to get when we come in from our morning walk, apples cores get hidden for her to sniff out!
Re: Human food and tidbids.. Trisha, thats a very good point, if you do decide to feed left overs don't feed them in the kitchen or you will encourage begging and drooling when you are trying to eat, we always give our dogs bits and pieces in the place they normally eat as they are not allowed in the kitchen when I am preparing food or at our meal times. xx
