I was thinking about Lisa and her scary moment when Simba went out of sight when she let him off lead. I don't know if it will help anyone, but I put a Hunting Bell on Charlie's collar which tells us where he is should he get tangled up in the woods on his long training line. Also if he should go out of sight, which he has not done recently, can't believe I am able to say that It's a bell about 1 1/2" diameter attached to a nylon band and is just slipped on the collar, sometimes they are called Bear Bells and are also useful for warning prey too. They are really cheap and I think they are really useful. xxx
Re: Hunting Bells That's a really good idea Helen. I listen for the tinkle of name tags but a bell would be louder so easier. Next purchase sorted.
Re: Hunting Bells I had a bell on the collar of my GSP, when it went quiet I knew she was on point. However, I became a bit deaf in the high frequencies after being too close to shot, so I couldn't always hear the bell, but had friends with me who could! It is very useful to be able to hear where your dog is. Don't need it with the Labs as the do stay much closer, but having grown up with GSPs the Labs do tend to have learned to go further from me ;D
Re: Hunting Bells I like that idea too. Our new tags don't tinkle quite so much. I like to hear where Lilly is when I can't see her :
Re: Hunting Bells Glad you like the idea . Charlie's came off the band a few weeks ago in the woods, so I made one a new one, I bought a Christmas decoration for £1 ages ago that had 4 bells attached, snipped 1 off and attached it to the nylon band, cheap as chips ;D It is very reassuring to be able to hear your dog when out of sight, also if they might be in trouble, tangled or caught in something too. Ooh I think that should go on a 'special' board as Helen's first good idea ;D x
Re: Hunting Bells Haha Helen!! ;D That and the 'sitting on your mats quietly' when the doorbell rings.
Re: Hunting Bells I used to use a hunting bell on one of my GWPs who always somehow got out of sight in a flash. Still have the bell on a hook in the kitchen and it brings me a memory-smile whenever I tinkle it

Re: Hunting Bells It is amazing isn't it MMM that GWP and GSP can literally disappear in a blink of an eye, it always surprised me!
GSPs do it too? I've no idea how she did it ..... however observant I tried to be she'd sneak off to go on point for feather or fur (couldn't tell her off for that so a bell, at least, gave me some idea which direction she loped off on)
Re: Hunting Bells A GSP sniffed out the dog treats in my pocket on Wednesday, I was without the dog and on my way to collect my son.
My OH was finishing a business meeting, they all had their coats on and were walking out. Someone offered a business card. OH dug into his pocket, for his cards, and pulled out the contents....at least he kept his cool enough to say "kibble anyone?" and make a joke of it... ;D ;D ;D
Re: Hunting Bells Think I would need a beacon and a fog horn for our Lola and that's just in the house lol she's a mischievous little so and so! Found her a couple of times trying to steal the cats food. ;D
