    Hey everyone!

Quick question are puppies (and adults dogs too) allowed ice cubes?

I've frozen Dexter's Kong's with some kibble in (the kibble has been soaked in water before hand) but was just wondering about ice cubes in general? We gave Dexter a couple last night. He played with them and eventually chewed them and I think they helped with his teething but when Ive Googled is it ok to do so, it's a bit of a mixed reaction...

Do you or have any of you given your dog ice cubes?

    Thanks!

Dexter is a cruncher Paige....his first love was stones for a very long time......he's still a bit partial given half a chance. Our Summer temps hit 50 so Dexter has crunched ice cubes a lot with absolutely no ill effects.....I freeze chew toys in weak chicken stock for him to lick around in the garden when the shade comes in and he has frozen kongs.if I'm honest I didn't even google it ....and I am very careful with him

I don't there there is any problem with ice - equally never googled it but can't see any reason why not!

Phew! Thanks Angela! Nor did I but Dexter and I were in the garden before and I noticed he'd wee'd quite a few times in what, seemed to me, a short space of time (I didn't actually time it) but straight away thought to myself that's not like him. I mean he drinks a lot, right from when we brought him home and just thought had the ice cubes done anything to his stomach or bladder? So I Googled it (I know, I know) and I started to worry. It's what I do best, worrying! ;)

It must be a 'Dexter' thing as our Dexter loves stones! You want to see some of the whoppers I've taken off him and that just in the garden!

Thanks everyone! I should have listened to Karl and not worried...

Ever since I've read you freeze Kong's Lynne, Dexter adores them! All good for his teething to I guess

It was the love of stones that made me think of ice cubes originally,I was trying to satisfy the clack he seems to like on his teeth.......funny old sort he is!

Slowly getting the hang of raising a puppy! Along with everyone's advice of course ::)

Dexter has been really well behaved today! Still loving the dining table chair legs but the baby gate is a life saver!

I'm back at work on Monday and Karl is off for two weeks... ;)

That's a great idea, ice cubes for teething, Otis has lost four teeth recently, and I can see one coming through, I think theyre really playing him up going by the amount he is chewing, and he has been chewing on me quite a bit to, ouch ouch ! x

Hhmm is there a minimum age at which you can give your puppy ice cubes? Whiskey (9 weeks) has a penchant for gnawing on whatever is nearest (and usually something expensive!). Would ice cubes be of any benefit to him?

We went through copious amounts of cardboard when Riley was little, kitchen roll tubes were popular and any box he could fit in and chew his way out of! It'll pass, hang in there :)

I gave Murphy ice cubes from really early on, like 9 weeks because when we got him it was that heat wave (heat wave for England!) and I was worried about him getting hot. He likes carrying them around and dripping water everywhere!

Ah Gerry I'm the ice cube expert...we live in the middle east and Summer temperatures hit 50 degrees c......it wasn't actually the heat that led me to ice cubes though,it was dexters obsession with stones and the hunting in the garden of them......he seemed to love the clack on his teeth so I deduced ice might be less stressful on his teeth and give him the same sensation......this led me into frozen ice block toys and frozen kongs .....Dexter was 5 months when he came to us though so i didn't do this with a little puppy..he had all his adult teeth when he was introduced to hard ice.....smaller pieces ,ice chips would be better for puppy and if it's a frozen toy, kong, run it under a tap before you give it to your puppy x

Thanks guys :) Nothing is sacred to his chewing :D being in Ireland (and at this time of year) heat isn't so much of an issue, but he has found pebbles a novelty the last couple of days:p I'll give the ice chips a go, thanks for the tip!

Ooh yes be careful with pebbles/stones. A vet told me never to let a dog pick stones etc. up as they can cause tooth decay from the clanking, which starts from the inside of the tooth. I hope I remembered that correctly, it was something like that ::) Helen x

Thanks Helen, I didn't know that :) Although I have been vigilant with the pebbles, I didn't want him choking on them or upsetting his stomach with pebbles rolling around in his tummy.

Ice cubes are great zero calorie treats, especially on a hot day. Try mixing in all the loose powder from the bottom of a bag of dried food to make beef flavoured ice cubes. Holly loves them!
