Hi all, We have a gorgeous 1 year old black male lab. He has been toilet trained for ages and we can't remember the last time he made a mess in the house. However, we visited my Mums house today, somewhere he has been many times before. He went for a look round upstairs, again, something he has done many times before. Only, this time he cocked his leg up against my Mums bed. Embarrassing or what!. What do you think may have made him do this? He had just peed on the yard, so he wasn't desperate. He is "entire". Do you think he was marking his territory? Thanks for any help. I would like to prevent this from happening again. Cheers Chris.
Re: Indoor wee! Hi Chris, sounds like marking to me but not sure how to deal with it. I used to look after a friends dog who was neutered and he would come into our house which he has been in many, many times and would do the same thing. Someone will have good advise for you. Helen
Re: Indoor wee! I had a friend with this problem (her dog, not her!) - only in other people's houses thankfully (or maybe not! :). He might not do it again but the trick is to stop it becoming a regular thing. I think it's the case of like any behaviour that has got to stop - constantly watching like a hawk (or confinement to safe area) and deterring and stopping if caught in the act.
Re: Indoor wee! I'd say it was marking. I would not give him free access to the house. Shut the door to your Mum's room. Without getting too Cesar Millan-ish, it might also be a good idea if your Mum gets him to do a few things like sits, drops, and maybe takes him for a short, on-lead walk (with you present) to help him see where she and he stand in the scheme of things (that is, she deserves respect, not pee).
Re: Indoor wee! Bones used to do it on occasions too... Especially when he was nervous, like at the vets. Dreadfully, he once did it up against clothes at a market stall... And once wee'd on a man's leg in the park... I found the best way was to be aware that it was a possibility, and to watch him carefully for the signs. If he even started to lift his leg in an inappropriate place, I would bellow "NO!!!" at him. 8) A bit embarrassing, but less so than the fall-out after the weeing in the market and on the man in the park episodes...
Re: Indoor wee! I witnessed a similar weeing faux pas, Karen. At our training class, a chap was chatting to the trainer when one of his two (older) dogs lifted his leg and let rip Funny thing was, he never noticed right away, and later he was looking slightly confused at his wet leg. ;D I suspect he knew who the culprit was as it wasn't a first offence. Guess thats boys for you!
Re: Indoor wee! My inlaws dog does this and I would say it's marking, he's wee'd on my duvet cover on the washing line and up curtains hanging in My OH aunts house : My brothers female spitz type dog used to do nervous wee's on our carpet, never worked out why but once she'd stayed for a few days we never had the problem again
Re: Indoor wee! Chloe is nearly six months old, had been clean and house trained since four months, today it is raining, two wees in kitchen, door was open as always, any ideas why she has regressed!! did not say anything too much as too late, but she has done so well. Poo outside today though, even though it was raining :-[
