Ella's left ear looked a little red last night and today it's red raw, she's been scratching and it's bleeding . So off to the vet we went and they had a really good look in her ear. They confirmed that her ear is infected and irritated and we have drops to put in/on for the next ten days. The strange thing is that her war canal was fine, no infection, no inflammation and no redness. So the infection is purely in the ear flap/outer ear area. The vet said this was good in one way as ear infections can be quite nasty and this one isn't too bad but they did say it was a little strange and may indicate an allergic reaction. Hopefully it's just an insect bite and she's not allergic to the new grass we put in!!
Poor girl. Hopefully the drops will sort it quickly with no recurrence. Juno had infected spots on her tummy in the summer which cleared with the 2nd lot of antibiotics, which had no known cause.
Ah hope the meds help out and it clears up quickly.... We've got an earl appointment today Dreading it as I know it's deeper than the flap and I'm scarred by ears going bad last year....
Much sympathy for ear troubles - I'm frantically cleaning a Lab ear here too, hoping to head off trouble....
JulieT hope your frantic cleaning does the trick and Charlie's ear is fine. After Ella was a nightmare when the vet tried to put her drops in, I'm very pleased to report that she has been an absolute star for me today and I've put the drops in both times without an issue! To be fair, it was the first time we'd seen that particular vet (same place but as we went last minute on a Friday night, there was only one vet working) and neither Ella nor I particularly liked her. Ella has also let me check her mouth, eyes and paws today (no nail clippers, just handling) too so I don't think things were as bad as I previously thought. Still some work to be done, especially outside the comfort of our house, but I'm feeling better about it ☺☺
Ah I'm glad you've got on better today Emily X My cleaning seems to have headed us out of trouble Julie so I hope you manage the same....our vet did say she could see some little white specks but she did a really good flush and massage and when it came out it was specks of sand so she said that might have just disrupted the balance so in just on monitor for worsening and clean once a day for the next 3 days ....
Oh that sounds like great news, fingers crossed Dexter's ear will be fine ☺. We're obviously on drops now but for future, what do use when you clean their ears? I Googled it a couple of days ago but there were so many different answers that I didn't dare try
